Eligibility and award category designations for the productions under consideration this season were determined by the Drama Desk board of directors with recommendations from the nominating committee. Because of the abundance of great work throughout the season, the Board also authorized the increase in the number of nominees allowed in select categories.

Highlights of the 28th Annual Easter Bonnet Competition, which raised a grand total of $4,532,129 this year, included the riotous opening number starring Book of Mormon's Rory O'Malley, performances from 12 Broadway and Off Broadway companies, as well as a special presentation from the National Touring companies, and performances by the companies of After Midnight, Avenue Q, Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella, Disaster!, If/Then, Kinky Boots, The Lion King, Mamma Mia! Co-Hosts Judith Light and Christopher Sieber announced the nominations for the 2014 Drama League Awards, including Distinguished Production of a Play, Distinguished Production of a Musical, Distinguished Revival of a Play, Distinguished Revival of a Musical, and the much coveted Distinguished Performance Award. The 2014 Drama League Nomination announcement begins the month of celebrations leading up to the 80th Annual Drama League Awards, which will be held at the Marriott Marquis Times Square (1535 Broadway) on Friday, May 16, 2014 at noon hosted by Broadway veteran Jesse Tyler Ferguson.
