BWW Reviews: STAGES St. Louis Puts On Flashy and Stylish MY ONE AND ONLY

MY ONE AND ONLY is what I like to call a "retrofit" musical, appropriating tunes from the Gershwin brothers (Ira and George, of course) catalog, while creating a book (Peter Stone and Timothy Mayer) that incorporates familiar elements from 1927, the year it's set in. That being said, it's a slick and flashy excursion into fun that's "all talking, all singing, and all dancing". This final production of the season for Stages St. Louis is a terrifically convivial ride utilizing the old "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back" plot that so many musicals, particularly from that era, rely on.

BWW Reviews: Wonderful, Charming THE SOUND OF MUSIC at Stages St. Louis

There are a number of reasons that Rodgers and Hammerstein's THE SOUND OF MUSIC is still so popular today. The songs are definitely catchy and familiar, and the story is compelling. But, it takes a good cast and solid direction to make it work properly, and the troupe that Stages St. Louis has corralled are excellent in their roles. This venerable warhorse of a show is their current production, and its charm still holds up remarkably well after all these years.

BWW Reviews: Stages St. Louis's Delightful Production of THE JUNGLE BOOK

The musical adaptation of the 1967 animated feature film, THE JUNGLE BOOK, is a sheer delight, perhaps best viewed through the eyes of a child. And, the first production I ever took my young son to see was this same show a few years back. But, he was so small he didn't really remember it that well. So, the opportunity to see it again afforded me the perfect chance to reacquainted him with its many charms. Stages St. Louis's presentation didn't disappoint, providing a crisply paced production that fully captured my son's attention and imagination once again.

BWW Reviews: HotCity Theatre's Engaging Production of ROUNDING THIRD

Playwright Richard Dresser's work, ROUNDING THIRD, really struck a chord with me since I'm a coach on my son's coach-pitch little league team. Sure, I hope they win every game they play, but much like the character of Michael is at the beginning of the play, at their age I'm just happy to see them have a good time playing. This show is more about older kids playing their last season of little league, so it's a bit different in how winning is approached, but it's a splendid look at two contrasting characters who, by the end of the show, have rubbed off a bit on each other, despite their differences. HotCity Theatre's production is a terrific one, powered by two splendid performances.

BWW Reviews: Shakespeare Festival St. Louis's Charming 1950's Production of THE TAMING OF THE SHREW

A busy month has produced a number of outstanding options for theatre-goers in St. Louis, and even when the weather is as variable as has been over the last few weeks, there's no denying the appeal of watching a fine production of Shakespeare in Forest Park, especially when it doesn't cost you one thin dime to attend (not counting the gas it may take you to get there). Shakespeare Festival St. Louis shrewdly (if you'll pardon the pun) re-imagines one of the Bard's works, THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, with sets, costumes and a Cadillac straight out of the 1950's, and it works like a charm.

BWW Review: HotCity Theatre's Production of EQUUS

If you only know about HotCity Theatre because of their dedication to producing new and original works by some of the most talented and unknown playwrights around, then you should also know how adept they are at staging revivals of edgy and provocative modern classics. This season they've chosen Peter Shaffer's taut masterpiece from 1973, EQUUS. And, they've delivered an intense, disturbing and brilliant production that's powered by sharp direction and exceptional performances.

Kevin Kline Award winner Ben Nordstrom and St. Louis veteran actor Steve Isom star in the St. Louis premiere of GUTENBERG! THE MUSICAL!, the Off-Broadway hit that the New York Times called 'A Smashing Success!'
