Chicago, IL-The League of Chicago Theatres celebrated the Chicago theater industry and community during its elegant annual Gala on Monday, June 9, 2014. This one-night-only event brought together friends of Chicago theatre and raised $120,000 for programs to support Chicago's 240 member theatre companies. Bang on a Can: Other Primary Structures, a concert featuring Bang on a Can All-Stars Vicky Chow (piano) and David Cossin (percussion) with Dither Quartet guitarists Taylor Levine and James Moore, will take place at the Jewish Museum on Thursday, July 10 at 7:30pm. This program is the first auditorium concert of the Jewish Museum and Bang on a Can's new partnership to produce a series of dynamic musical performances at the Museum from June 2014 to May 2015, inspired by the Jewish Museum's diverse slate of exhibitions.
The Jewish Museum and Bang on a Can are launching a new partnership to produce a series of dynamic musical performances at the Museum from June 2014 to May 2015. Inspired by the Jewish Museum's diverse slate of exhibitions, the five programs will take place throughout the year across the Museum at Fifth Avenue and 92nd Street, Manhattan. The partnership kicks off with Asphalt Orchestra performing during the Museum Mile Festival on June 10, followed by a July 10 concert featuring works by Minimalist composers such as Philip Glass and Louis Andriessen in conjunction with Other Primary Structures, an exhibition of global sculpture from the 1960s.

On Saturday, December 7 at 9:30 p.m. in Zankel Hall, alto saxophonist, composer, and arranger Miguel Zenon examines the complexities and contradictions of the Puerto Rican experience with his latest work-a multimedia presentation honoring his homeland entitled Identities Are Changeable: Tales from the Diaspora. The evening-length song cycle and video installation-created in collaboration with video artist and co-founder of the Marginal Utility gallery in Philadelphia, David Dempewolf-explores the experience of Puerto Ricans who have moved to the mainland, particularly New York City, and was inspired by a series of interviews that Zenon conducted with them. Audio and video excerpts of these interviews are woven throughout.
Just back from a tour of Europe with James 'Blood' Ulmer's Odyssey band, industry veteran drummer Warren Benbow releases HARMOLODIC ADVENTURE. The Kimmel Center's Creative Music Program for Jazz continues its popular Meet the Masters series engaging 25+ regional student musicians, ages 11-17, in master class workshops led by world renowned jazz musicians. On Saturday, November 10, the Meet the Masters workshop is led by one of the top tenor saxophonists and flautists, Gary Thomas, in the Merck Arts Education Center from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Legendary jazz trumpeter and composer Ralph Alessi leads the master workshop on Saturday, December 22.
