The Brown University/Trinity Rep MFA Programs present Sophie Treadwell's groundbreaking expressionistic drama Machinal, directed by Aubrey Snowden (Brown/Trinity Rep MFA Programs '13). Powerful, and gripping, the play traces the plight of a woman fighting the rules of society - and ultimately paying the highest price. Performances are tonight, December 4 through December 16 in the Citizens Bank Theater, Pell Chafee Performance Center, 87 Empire Street, Providence.
The Vassar Drama department will present three performances of Aristophanes' comedic satire about war and sex, Lysistrata, directed by guest artist Ianthe Demos, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, December 6, 7, and 8, at 8:00pm, in the Martel Theater of the Vogelstein Center for Drama and Film. Demos, a 2000 Vassar graduate, co-founded the critically acclaimed One Year Lease theater company (OYL) in 2001 and their work has been widely praised by the New York Times and New York magazine among other outlets. Rogers Park's Lifeline Theatre continues bringing educational opportunities to children with its twelfth annual Summer Drama Camps. Lifeline Theatre's Summer Drama Camps introduce kids to basic principles of performance and the kind of work that Lifeline is known for, namely story adaptation and ensemble work. Over the course of the programs, students explore popular children's books and adapt them for the stage, and parents enjoy a performance at the end. In Lifeline's camps, kids learn not only how to act out stories and characters, but also how to work more patiently and respectfully with their peers, gain confidence, and express themselves better.
In 1929, Patrick Hamilton wrote the groundbreaking play Rope, in which two undergraduates plot and execute the murder of an innocent classmate as an exercise in intellectual superiority. The killers place the body in a chest and then host a cocktail party, serving food and drink from the make-shift coffin to guests, including the boy's family. As the evening progresses and liquor is poured, the young killers become increasingly bold until the action spirals out of control toward its unsettling yet satisfying finale. This highly physical, energetic production transplants the play from London to New York, just before the crash of '29, providing a Jazz Age backdrop for Hamilton's gripping thriller.
