Today's big news: BROADWAY STANDS UP FOR FREEDOM benefits the NYCLU, PRIVACY with Daniel Radcliffe opens tonight, and NYMF kicks off today!

Today, a casting notice seems to confirm much of this with Mayer confirmed as director and the production set for a limited Broadway run in early 2017. The notice reports that rehearsals will begin in January, previews in February followed by a March opening and a June closing. This would follow the timetable of similar short-run star-driven play projects.  

Today, casting was announced for the stage adaptation of Disney's iconic film "Freaky Friday," which will be led by Emma Hunton ("Spring Awakening," "Next to Normal") and Heidi Blickenstaff ("Something Rotten," "The Little Mermaid") as daughter and mother, respectively. It will have a world premiere in October at the Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA.

Virginia Repertory Theatre's DREAMGIRLS opened June 24 at the Sara Belle and Neil November Theatre, 114 West Broad Street. The production runs through August 7, 2016. With music by Henry Krieger and lyrics and book byTom Eyen, this megawatt Broadway crowd-pleaser electrifies the stage with Motown dreams and powerhouse voices. Loosely based on Diana Ross and the Supremes, the story follows the turbo-charged rise to fame of the Dreams. BroadwayWorld has a first look at the cast in action below!

Feinstein's/54 Below, Broadway's Supper Club, presented Every Little Step star and two-time Helen Hayes Award winner Natascia Diaz in her New York City solo debut one month ago today, following her acclaimed and nominated performance as Anita in Signature Theatre's sold out run of West Side Story in Washington, D.C. Juilliard Drama announces its 2016-17 season of fully staged productions featuring Juilliard's Group 46 acting students in their fourth and final year in the drama program at Juilliard.

Heidi Blickenstaff (Broadway's Something Rotten!) and Emma Hunton (Broadway's Spring Awakening) are set to star as mother and daughter in the world premiere production of the new musical Freaky Friday at Signature Theatre. The musical, based on the beloved 1972 novel by Mary Rodgers and hit Disney films and developed by Disney Theatrical Productions expressly for licensing to theatres, features a book byBridget Carpenter, music by Tom Kitt and lyrics by Brian Yorkey. This premiere production will be directed byChristopher Ashley with choreography by Sergio Trujillo. Freaky Friday will run from October 4 - November 13 in Signature Theatre's MAX Theatre. Further casting and creative team members will be announced in the coming months.

Director Jimmy Maize (Spoon River Anthology at The Invisible Dog) and BOSS (En Garde Arts) will lead actresses Libby Winters (American Idiot) and Ito Aghayere (Lortel Nomination for Familiar at Playwrights Horizons) in Uniforms by Jeffrey James Keyes (The End of Days &Imaginary Friends) next month in the Samuel French 41st Annual Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival in New York City.

A gripping tragedy of love that transcends all, Elton John and Tim Rice's AIDA follows a courageous Nubian princess as she is forced to choose between passion and allegiance.  This poignant musical features HAMILTON's own Emmy Raver-Lampman as Aida and Broadway's Mark Evans as Radames.

Judy Kuhn is currently starring in the Tony Award winning Broadway musical 'Fun Home,' for which she was nominated for Tony and Drama League Award Nominations and won the Lucille Lortel Award. On July 29 and 30 at 7:00 pm she joins the celebrated Broadway @ The Art House series, with Sirius XM radio star Seth Rudetsky as pianist and host.

Drury Lane Theatre premieres The Cabaret Room at Drury Lane with Leading Ladies of Chicago Theatre, a two-night event that gives audiences exclusive access to some of Chicago's top talent in an intimate setting.

Arena Stage presents BORN FOR THIS: THE BeBe Winans STORY, the heartwarming true story of six-time Grammy Award-winning icon BeBe Winans' journey to fame. BORN FOR THIS, directed by celebrated director and playwright Charles Randolph-Wright (Motown The Musical), is a co-production with the ALLIANCE THEATRE in Atlanta, Ga., where the production ran April 13-May 15, 2016 prior to the Arena Stage production. The new musical, which officially kicks off Arena Stage's 2016/17 season, features original songs and Winans family hits, with a book by Randolph-Wright and Winans. The Ogunquit Playhouse will present the New England premiere of THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, on stage from tonight, July 13, to August 6, making The Playhouse one of the first regional theaters in the U.S. to stage this new musical.

The Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust today announced that the Ninth Annual "Mimi" Awards will be presented on Monday, November 14, 2016 at Lincoln Center Theater.  The "Mimi" Awards are presented annually to honor the outstanding artistry and accomplishments of some of the most gifted American playwrights.

Are you the next Broadway or pop sensation? The Tony Award-winning Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA is hosting the 'Signature Voice' competition on July 23rd during the theater's annual Open House. Held in Signature's MAX Theatre, the competition will host a panel of three celebrity judges in search of the best undiscovered singers in the DC region.

The international smash hit musical, MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET is set on December 4, 1956, when an auspicious twist of fate brought Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley together. Sam Phillips, the "Father of Rock 'n' Roll" who was responsible for launching the careers of each icon, brought the four legendary musicians together at the Sun Records studio in Memphis for the first and only time. The resulting evening became known as one of the greatest rock 'n' roll jam sessions in history.

Led by Founding Artistic Director Katherine Kovner and Producing Director Roberta Pereira, The Playwrights Realm will kick off its 2016-17 10th anniversary season with the world premiere of Sarah Delappe's The Wolves. Directed by Lila Neugebauer and featuring a company of ten female actors, DeLappe's award-winning debut play will be presented at The Realm's new home for the season The Duke on 42nd Street, August 29-September 24, 2016.

The Off-Broadway premiere of Elda Cusick's new play, Austin, will begin a limited engagement on Saturday July 23rd at Theatre Row (410 West 42nd Street, between 9th and 10th Avenues). Ed Setrakian directs a cast that stars Thomas G. Waites ('OZ'), James McCaffrey ('Rescue Me'), Rochelle Bostrom, AJ Cedeño, and Michaela Waites. Opening Night is set for August 4th. Austin will play a limited run through September 10th only.
