BWW Review: Upstream Theater Presents Powerful Production of OEDIPUS KING
by Chris Gibson
- Oct 12, 2010
The story of Oedipus is a tragic one, and perhaps one of the most pitiable and pathetic in all of the Greek canon. The tale is familiar and famous enough to have inspired a complex named after the protagonist, although Sigmund Freud's description of it relates more to the unconscious guilt that centers around an individual who exhibits obsessive behavior toward their parent of the opposite sex, than it does the actual circumstances surrounding Oedipus. That definition really doesn't fit the actual figure of Oedipus, because he's completely unaware of the missing fork in his family tree when he takes his own mother as his wife, after being abandoned as a child. Upstream Theater is presenting a powerful and memorable production of this play, OEDIPUS KING, from an adaptation by David Slavitt, which actually manages, even amidst all the heartbreak and pain, to find some small moments of humor to lighten the overall darkness of the piece.

- Oct 6, 2010
Lehmann Maupin presents Peak, an exhibition of new works by Tony Oursler, on view at 201 Chrystie Street, 7 October - 4 December 2010. Peak continues the artist's exploration into the ways in which technology affects the human psyche. Focusing on humankind's obsessive relationship to computers and other virtual platforms, the works in this exhibition are microcosmic scenes that convey the varied nature of these relationships, such as obsession, escapism, isolation and sexual fetish. The installations reference dynamic systems and models, such as flowcharts, Rube Goldberg machines and astronomical orreries. Oursler's projections combine glass, clay, steel and other raw materials with a synthesis of performance language and rhythmic editing.

Review - Power Balladz & Freud's Last Session
by Ben Peltz
- Aug 22, 2010
Lovers of the hair bands of 70s, 80s and 90s who find Rock of Ages just too intellectually complex shall rejoice at the arrival of Power Balladz, the show that puts the 'z' in 'rock anthem.' I'm just not certain where exactly it puts it.
