Fred Arsenault, Ashlie Atkinson, et al. to Star in Arena Stage's BOOK CLUB PLAY, 10/7-11/6

In her smart comedy The Book Club Play, D.C.-area playwright Karen Zacarías examines the intricacies of book clubs, with their unspoken rules, high-spirited debates and strong bonds formed when least expected. With an ensemble cast featuring Fred Arsenault, Ashlie Atkinson, Rachael Holmes, Eric Messner, Kate Eastwood Norris and Tom Story, this is Zacarías' second collaboration with Director Molly Smith at Arena Stage and is the first work of a Resident Playwright to be produced as part of their three-year residencies through the American Voices New Play Institute. The Book Club Play runs October 7-November 6, 2011 in the Arlene and Robert Kogod Cradle.

Mary Badham to Speak at Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, 11/7 & 8

Academy Award-nominated actress Mary Badham who played Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird, one of the most poignant films in cinematic history, will appear at The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey on Monday, November 7 and Tuesday, November 8 at 7:30 p.m.

HABIT OF ART Opens at The Metheny Theatre

The Studio Theatre follows up its 2008 hit production of The History Boys with Alan Bennett's next play, The Habit of Art. Deep in the bowels of London's National Theatre, rehearsals for a new play go apace: Benjamin Britten is having trouble with his latest opera and seeks out his collaborator, poet W. H. Auden, after a twenty-five year separation. Between visits by a rent boy and a biographer-whom Auden briefly mistakes for the rent boy-these aging artists wrestle with their desires, their jealousies, the ephemeral connection between creativity and inspiration, and all the reasons their friendship fell apart.

Quintessence Theatre Presents THE VENETIAN TWINS, MERCHANT OF VENICE

Quintessence Theatre Group launches its second season with two classic comedies: Carlo Goldoni's THE VENETIAN TWINS, in a translation by Ranjit Bolt, and William Shakespeare's THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, to be presented in repertory and directed by Alexander Burns.

Vladimir Versailles Joins Rattlestick's THE WOOD

Rattlestick Playwrights Theater announced today that Vladimir Versailles has joined the cast of The Wood, a new play by award-winning filmmaker Dan Klores about the life of New York columnist Mike McAlary. Mr. Versailles assumes the role of Abner Louima, replacing Gregory Bastien who has left the production.

Philip Himberg Appointed Theatre Communications Group President

Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the national organization for theatre, announces new leadership of its board of directors and seven new members. Philip Himberg, producing artistic director of the Sundance Institute Theatre Program, will assume the position of board president. He succeeds Martha Lavey, artistic director of Steppenwolf, who concluded a two year term in June. He will be joined by returning vice president, James Bundy, artistic director, Yale Repertory Theatre and newly appointed vice president Rachel Kraft, executive director, Lookingglass Theatre Company. Roche Schulfer, executive director, Goodman Theatre will serve as treasurer and Olga Sanchez, artistic director, Miracle Theatre Group, will serve again as secretary. Lavey will remain on the board as immediate past President.

The Shakespeare Theatre of NJ Presents Midsummer at the Outdoor Stage, Closes 7/31

The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey will celebrate the 10th Anniversary of its Outdoor Stage - the Theatre's enormously popular annual summer tradition of family theatre 'under-the-stars' - with the world's most popular comedy, A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare.
