Anna in the Tropics runs September 23-October 9 in the Young Theatre on campus. This poetic play is set in a Cuban-American cigar factory in Florida in 1929 where cigars are rolled by hand while lectors entertain the workers and divert them from their monotonous jobs. The arrival of a new lector is a cause for celebration, but when he begins to read aloud from Anna Karenina, he unwittingly becomes a catalyst in the lives of his avid listeners, for whom Tolstoy, the tropics and the American dream prove a volatile combination.

Internationally renowned, New York City-based experimental theater company Theater Mitu explores the history, contradictions and mythology of the ever-complicated landscape of the US/Mexico border in a uniquely theatrical multi-media event. Vancouver International Flamenco Festival proudly presents the local debut of Mercedes Amaya Company,September 16 & 17, 2016, 8pm at the Vancouver Playhouse. Helmed by the niece of legendary Gypsy flamenco dancer, Carmen Amaya, this ensemble of artists from Mexico and Spain will dazzle in Templanza, a sensuous journey through the history of flamenco and its Gitano origins.
