Planet Connections Theater Festivity will premiere in June 2009 as a new festival designed to promote awareness in the theatrical community about social and cultural issues. Formed by two Spotlight On Festival alums, Glory Bowen and Frank Calo, the festival will explore using theater as a tool for social change while connecting artists with new audiences in fun theatrical environment. The goals of the festival are to inspire people to get involved and fight for world causes.
Vortex Theater Company (Joshua Randall, Artistic Director) is set to present A Midsummer Nightmare, an off-season haunted house running May 22 June 13, 2009 at the Sanford Meisner Theater (164 Eleventh Avenue, between 22/23). Lanford Wilson's 38th play first opened in Los Angeles in January 1987 and put John Malkovich on the 'international' road to stardom shortly afterwards. Garnering multiple awards in several categories, and written with a ?pas de quatre' style in mind, this contemporary and romantic story begins shortly after a funeral brings four self-distancing and comical characters together.
Main Street Theater concludes its 2008-2009 season with Clifford Odets' masterpiece Awake and Sing! Originally produced on Broadway in 1935 with Stella Adler, Sanford Meisner, Luther Adler, and other members of the Group Theatre, Main Street's production has previews May 2, 3, and 6 and opens Thursday, May 7, and runs through June 7 at Main Street Theater - Rice Village, 2540 Times Blvd. (There is no performance Friday, May 8.)
