Theater professionals from across Michigan will gather Aug. 29 when The 2016 Wilde Awards are presented at The Berman Center for the Performing Arts in the Detroit suburb of West Bloomfield. Presented by EncoreMichigan.com, the most comprehensive resource for news and information about the state's professional theater industry, The Wilde Awards were established in 2002 to honor the excellent work produced by Michigan's professional theaters.

The Cape Cod Theatre Company (CCTC), home of the Harwich Junior Theatre, is now celebrating its 65th season with a beautiful rendition of Disney's The Little Mermaid. Based on Anderson's story and the original Disney film produced by Howard Ashman and John Musker, with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, book by Doug Wright and hereby directed/choreographed by the incredibly gifted Ethan Paulini, CCTC's production of The Little Mermaid is really quite a wonderful collection of profound moments of storytelling.

During The Fringe Pressgang Theatre (SERVED) is hosting twelve storytelling shows. For each show we pick a theme and invite five artists to tell a true story on that theme. Hosted and curated by Graham Isador (Playwright's unit at Soulpepper, RISK podcast) the events feature performances from the best in Toronto comedy, theatre, and music.

Nancy Golden, an accomplished marketing and fundraising professional with a distinguished record of involvement with area cultural and nonprofit organizations, has been named Opera Santa Barbara Board chair. Ms. Golden, who had been serving as vice-chair, will succeed Sandra Urquhart when her two-year term begins July 1. Rounding out the Board's new complement of officers are Jon DuPrau (vice-chair), Mary Penny (secretary), Richard Banks (treasurer), and Beno Budgor (member at large). Each will serve a one-year term.

On Sunday, we closed the world premiere of Backbeard: A New Musical at the Theatre Institute at Sage after a short two-week run. It came and went too quickly, and I do not know that any of us could have anticipated just how profoundly this sweet little musical would move us, how deeply it would nestle itself into our hearts.

As one of the pianists for the original Broadway production of Annie, many of my voice teacher colleagues were horrified at the thought of little girls being asked to belt out songs such as "Tomorrow" and "Hard Knock Life." And yet, many of these teachers refused to accept those young girls as students! At that time, many voice teachers would not agree to teach students who had unchanged, prepubescent voices. They were under the impression that voice lessons could permanently damage a child's voice, which remained a widely accepted belief for many years.
