New York's PROTOTYPE OperaTheatreNow Festival returns for its seventh season from January 5 to the 13th and the one thing that you can't ask about it is “What's new?” That's not because there's nothing to answer. On the contrary--there's too much, in style, in content, in the sizes of its venues: This year's Festival is larger than ever, with a dozen works, 24 composerlibrettists and over 150 collaborators.

Natasha Sinha will join Signature Theatre as Director of Artistic Programs, the company announced today. Ms. Sinha has previously worked as LCT3/Lincoln Center Theater's Associate Director and Barrington Stage Company's Associate Producer.

Victory Gardens Theater, with Actors Theatre of Louisville, to present the Co-World Premiere of How to Defend Yourself, written by Lily Padilla and directed by Marti Lyons. How to Defend Yourself will be presented at the 2019 Humana Festival of New American Plays (March 21 - April 7, 2019) and as part of the Victory Gardens Theater 2019/2020 Season (January 24 - February 23, 2020).

This popular and highly-anticipated festival of The Public's winter season will include artists from across the U.S. and around the world, including Argentina, Australia, France, Lebanon, Nigeria, Norway, Palestine, and the UK. Curated by UTR Festival Director Mark Russell, this year's UNDER THE RADAR FESTIVAL continues to expand to venues throughout New York City in addition to The Public Theater's home at Astor Place. Botanicum Seedlings, Theatricum Botanicum's new play development program, is pleased to announce the recipient of the 8th annual "Izzy" award for new plays. The winning play, The Orange Garden by Joanna Garner, was presented during last year's Summer Playreadings. The Izzy is named for Theatricum's first dramaturg, Israel Baran, who passed away in 2007. To honor Israel's keen mind, sharp tongue, and ear for language (despite the fact that he was frustratingly deaf), the Izzy was established to recognize the Seedlings play that "speaks to us the loudest."
The University of Texas at Austin Department of Theatre and Dance presents a semi-staged reading featuring professional and student actors in a lyrical biography of the life and work Leonard Bernstein, directed by KJ Sanchez (ReEntry). Written by Kirk Lynn (The Method Gun) and commissioned through collaboration with The College of Fine Arts and Texas Performing Arts, A Plan and Not Quite Enough Time takes a symphonic look at the major melodies playing throughout Bernstein's life: music, family, spiritual longing, carnal passions and death. We see him as a boy and man, as a father and son; bisexually brilliant and politically naive. Cymbals crash, the brass crescendo, the maestro takes a bow.
