The Auditorium Theatre announces its 2017-18 Season under new Chief Executive Officer, Tania Castroverde Moskalenko, and its new tagline, "The Theatre for the People."
The 12th annual performances of Too Hot to Handel: The Jazz-Gospel Messiah take place at the Auditorium Theatre on January 14 and 15, the weekend before Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Renowned soloists Rodrick Dixon, Alfreda Burke, and Karen Marie Richardson join legendary pianist Alvin Waddles in the celebratory production, which features a choir of over 100 choir members and musicians. Too Hot to Handel is based on George Frideric Handel's Messiah, and pairs Handel's traditional classical score with jazz, gospel, and blues.
On Sunday, November 13, the historic Auditorium Theatre will open its doors to families for a fun-filled day complete with kid-friendly architectural activities led by the Chicago Architecture Foundation, dancing lessons with former Joffrey Ballet dancer Erica Edwards, vocal workshops with Too Hot To Handel star Rodrick Dixon, and writing activities with Dance Magazine critic Zachary Whittenburg. Families also can participate in acting games, scavenger hunts, crafts, and many other interactive activities great for kids of all ages! All aspiring performers, budding architects, dance critics-in-training, and future audience members are invited to come and learn how the Auditorium Theatre makes the magic happen. All activities are appropriate for kids and kids-at-heart, and the event is FREE!

The centerpiece of the Carnegie Hall program is the New York premiere of The Ordering of Moses, a work by Robert Nathaniel Dett that received its world premiere at the 1937 May Festival, performed by a chorus of 350 with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra led by Eugene Goosens. Mr. Conlon will open the program with John Adams' Harmonium.
