Beyond Sunday: A Choral World of Sondheim

Closing out the 26th season, Artistic Director David Simmons has put together some of the greatest works by your favorite composer and mine, Stephen Sondheim. When I was 14 years old, I heard 'Sunday' from Sunday in the Park with George for the first time. I remember it clearly. I'd borrowed the album from the library - yes - while everyone else was playing kickball down the street, I was holed up in my room, listening to the vinyl of lesser-known musicals. THAT'S how gay I am.

Music has the power to touch the human spirit, transcending time, place, boundaries and language and spurring understanding and connection. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Manfred Honeck are deeply committed to music's ability to promote and spread a spiritual and universal message, and to that end invite the public to two free 'Music for the Spirit' concerts tonight, November 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Westminster Presbyterian Church in Upper St. Clair and on Saturday, November 22 at 8 p.m. at Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School in Cranberry.

Minnelli and LuPone Part of Virginia Arts Festival's 2009 Season

In its 13th Season, the Virginia Arts Festival will present the world?s great performers to audiences throughout Hampton Roads, in six whirlwind weeks that will bring over 50 performances to more than two dozen venues in ten cities across the region. Performances include the best of Broadway, breathtaking ballet, electrifying modern dance, colorful performance traditions from around the world?and great music for every taste, from the world?s most acclaimed classical artists to top performers of pop, country, bluegrass, and jazz. Showstoppers Liza Minnelli and Patti LuPone, two of the most extraordinary voices in American theater, bookend the 2009 Festival.
