THE NUTCRACKER and More Set for Cleveland Orchestra's 2012 Holiday Festival, Now thru 12/23

The Cleveland Orchestra announces its 2012 Holiday Festival, scheduled for tonight, November 29 through December 23. This season's expanded Festival begins with five performances of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker in a collaboration with The Joffrey Ballet at the State Theatre in PlayhouseSquare in downtown Cleveland. Conceived and originally directed in 1987 by Robert Joffrey, with contribution from Gerald Arpino, this production of The Nutcracker includes more than 40 company dancers, 200 brilliant costumes, and larger-than-life scenery. The performances mark the Orchestra's return to performing in downtown Cleveland during the winter season and the first time the Orchestra has ever performed in a full production of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker.

Mandy Patinkin to Narrate PBS's MAVERICKS OF AMERICAN DANCE, 12/28

Narrated by Mandy Patinkin (Homeland), the film features interviews with former and current Joffrey dancers, the breakthroughs of choreograpers Twyla Tharp, Laura Dean and Margo Sappington, and rare archival performance footage, including excerpts from signature works Astarte, Trinity, and Billboards (the latter with music by Prince).

Joffrey Ballet Launches 2012-13 Season with HUMAN LANDSCAPES, Now thru 10/28

The Joffrey Ballet's 2012-2013 season launches this fall with a mixed repertory program titled HUMAN LANDSCAPES, featuring three choreographers exploring principles of the human spirit through dance. The Joffrey brings James Kudelka's critically acclaimed Pretty BALLET back to the stage along with Jiri Kylian's rarely seen work FORGOTTEN LAND. A highlight of the season is the ground-breaking anti-war ballet THE GREEN TABLE, choreographed by Kurt Jooss in the aftermath of World War I. The HUMAN LANDSCAPES program is presented in 10 performances only at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University, 50 E. Congress Parkway, tonight, October 17 - 28, 2012.

American Repertory Ballet Presents AN EVENING OF PREMIERES Tonight, 10/6

American Repertory Ballet will be performing a program of company premieres - An Evening of Premieres - tonight, October 6, 2012 at 8:00pm. The program will feature a new work by Resident Choreographer Mary Barton, Ann Marie DeAngelo's Blackberry Winter, and a major revival of Gerald Arpino's Viva Vivaldi.

PlayhouseSquare presents its 10th annual Dance Showcase tonight, September 7 at 7 p.m. in the Palace Theatre. Featuring seven of Northeast Ohio's finest professional dance companies, the performance highlights a wide array of dance styles from ballet to contemporary to classical Indian dance.

Joffrey Ballet Closes Jacob's Pillow 80th Anniversary Season, 8/22-26

The Joffrey Ballet, one of America's pioneering ballet companies of the 20th century, makes a rare East Coast appearance to conclude the Jacob's Pillow 80th Anniversary Season August 22-26. The Joffrey Ballet returns for the first time since its high-profile appearances at the Pillow in the 1950s and 60s, presenting an impressive program that features Taiwanese-American choreographer Edwaard Liang's Age of Innocence, Russian choreographer Yuri Possokhov's Bells, and the world premiere of Son of Chamber Symphony by Stanton Welch, Artistic Director of Houston Ballet.

Mandy Patinkin will narrate PBS's AMERICAN MASTERS JOFFREY BALLET on Friday December 28th at 9pm. The special will cover the story of the first quintessentially American dance company founded by Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino, who pioneered a new dance philosophy.

Docurama Films Releases JOFFREY Documentary, 6/12

Docurama Films today announced that Joffrey: Mavericks of American Dance, a feature-length documentary, directed by Bob Hercules (Bill T. Jones: A Good Man), will debut on DVD and standard digital platforms on June 12, 2012, following a festival premiere and nationwide theatrical release.

The Joffrey Ballet, Chicago's world-renowned ballet company that has toured to over 80 countries throughout its storied history (more than any other dance company), today hosted an international cadre of NATO dignitary spouses and other representations at its Loop home, Joffrey Tower, at 10 East Randolph Street. The special event, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State in cooperation with Blair House, included a short performance and reception, entertaining guests and sharing with them a part of Chicago's vibrant cultural and artistic community.
