LA's Geffen Playhouse to Premiere Doyle-Helmed THE EXORCIST & More in '11-'12

Next season the Geffen Playhouse is introducing Angelenos to acclaimed new works - including the previously announced Red Hot Patriot: The Kick Ass Wit of Molly Ivins featuring Kathleen Turner, Pulitzer Prize nominee The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity by Kristoffer Diaz and Tony Award nominee Next Fall by Geoffrey Nauffts - as well as introducing the theater community at large to three world premieres - including a stage adaptation of The Exorcist by Edgar Award winner John Pielmeier (Agnes of God), The Jacksonian, a new work by Pulitzer Prize winner Beth Henley, and Radiance: The Passion of Marie Curie, the playwriting debut of actor Alan Alda. In addition to the acclaimed playwrights represented this season, the Geffen Playhouse is welcoming internationally lauded directors to helm these works including Tony Award winners John Doyle and Robert Falls.

SRTP Presents YELLOW FACE at Pierce Hall, 6/14 -17

Yellow Face, the nationally-acclaimed play by Tony Award winning playwright David Henry Hwang, makes its Chicago debut at Silk Road Theatre Project (SRTP), produced in association with the Goodman Theatre. Goodman Theatre Hosts Merritt Design Awards, 5/2

The 18th Annual Merritt Award for Excellence in Design and Collaboration program, honoring and celebrating the work of scenic designer Walt Spangler (Desire Under the Elms, King Lear), will take place on Monday, May 2, at Goodman Theatre. Goodman Theatre's Artistic Director Robert Falls, a founding member of the Michael Merritt Endowment Fund Steering Committee, will present the award to Mr. Spangler. Sound designer, composer, musician and DJ, Mikhail Fiksel (Old Town, Last of the Dragons) will receive The Michael Maggio Emerging Designer Award. There will also be a presentation of three student scholarship recipients representing The Theatre School at DePaul University (sound designer Jeff Gary), Northwestern University (scenic designer Scott Davis) and from Columbia College Chicago for The John Murbach Scholarship for Collaborative Design (lighting designer Claire Chrzan).

O'Neill Theatre Center Announces 2011 Playwrights Conference Selections

The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center announced today eight plays to be developed at the 2011 National Playwrights Conference (NPC) under the leadership of Artistic Director Wendy C. Goldberg. The selected playwrights will spend the month of July at the O'Neill's campus developing and presenting staged readings of their work during the NPC's 47th season. Tickets for these readings go on sale Wednesday, June 8. Advanced ticket sales for O'Neill Members will be available Monday, May 16

Photo Flash: Goodman Theatre's EL NOGALAR

Prolific playwright and Mexican Chicagoan Tanya Saracho brings US/Mexico border violence and class divide into sharp relief in El Nogalar, presented at Goodman Theatre, produced and commissioned by Teatro Vista, starting March 26, 2011. The Goodman's fourth collaboration with Teatro Vista over 16 years, El Nogalar marks the beginning of a new three-year producing partnership dedicated to new work by Latino writers. Cecilie D. Keenan directs this world premiere by Saracho-a Teatro Vista resident playwright and 'one of Chicago['s] most talented young writers' (Chicago Tribune)-developed in a staged reading during the Goodman's Latino Theatre Festival. El Nogalar (pecan orchard) is inspired by Anton Chekhov's classic The Cherry Orchard and charts a Mexican family's experience as their way of life is threatened by encroaching drug cartels, violence and economic upheaval. El Nogalar begins previews March 26 (Opening Night is April 4) and runs through April 24, 2011 in the Goodman's Owen Theatre; tickets are $10 - $42 (ticket prices are subject to change). Tony-and Emmy Award-winning John Mahoney (Frasier, The Seafarer), Karen Aldridge (The Trinity River Plays, The Cook), Phillip James Brannon (The Brother/Sister Plays, Richard III), Joseph Foronda (Pacific Overtures, Miss Saigon), Ora Jones (Animal Crackers, The Brother/Sister Plays), Sandra Marquez (Boleros for the Disenchanted, Anna in the Tropics) and Teatro Vista Artistic Director Edward F. Torres (Electricidad, Elliot (A Soldier's Fugue)) join the Belarusian company on stage during the moving climactic moments of Being Harold Pinter, concluding an historic theatrical event for the City of Chicago. Two additional Chicago actors are still to be announced.
