MAGNOLIA Takes Root At Goodman Theater 3/14-4/19

Magnolia, Artistic Associate Regina Taylor's world premiere about possibility in the face of seismic social change, takes root at the Goodman this spring, March 14 - April 19, 2009. Directing for the first time at the Goodman, Tony Award winner Anna D. Shapiro helms a cast of 12 led by Academy Award nominee Annette O'Toole (Smallville, A Mighty Wind, 48 Hours) and Tony Award nominee John Earl Jelks (August Wilson's Radio Golf and Gem of the Ocean) in the leading roles of Lily and Thomas. Tickets to Magnolia are $25 - $70. A complete performance schedule including dates, times and ticket prices appears at the end of this release. O'Neill Exploration Is A Success, Attendance Over 50,000

Three countries, six theater companies, fourteen plays and programs, sixty-one days and an audience numbering nearly 50,000 defined 'A Global Exploration: Eugene O'Neill in the 21st Century' and marked an unprecedented success for Goodman Theatre. Artistic Director Robert Falls curated the ambitious eight-play selection of O'Neill's early works that appeared on both of the Goodman's stages January 7 - March 8: the 856-Albert and the 400-seat flexible Owen, which was transformed seven times, custom-designed for the visiting companies. The Exploration offerings performed at a grand total of 90% of capacity-alone, Falls' Broadway-bound production of Desire Under the Elms achieved 95% of capacity.

Brian Dennehy Joins Goodman's Artistic Collective

Robert Falls proudly names his longtime artistic collaborator Brian Dennehy-two-time Tony and Golden Globe Award winner and six-time Emmy Award nominee-the newest member of Goodman Theatre's Artistic Collective, a diverse group of outstanding American theater artists who make the Goodman their artistic home.

SPRING AWAKENING Comes To Cleveland For 18 Performances

Broadway's most talked about new musical and the biggest Tony Award-winner in years is coming to Cleveland. Spring Awakening, the 8-time Tony Award? winning Broadway musical, will open at PlayhouseSquare's PalaceTheatre and play for 16 performances, March 3-15. Spring Awakening is part of the KeyBank Broadway Series at PlayhouseSquare. Spring Awakening swept the 2007 Tony Awards? winning eight out of its eleven nominations, including Best Musical, Best Director (Michael Mayer), Best Book (Steven Sater), Best Choreography (Bill T. Jones), Best Orchestrations (Duncan Sheik), Best Lighting Design (Kevin Adams), Best Featured Actor (John Gallagher Jr.).

DESIRE UNDER THE ELMS Extends Its Run Until 3/1

Desire Under the Elms at Goodman Theater opens tonight. Rumors have spread that the show has Broadway in its sights, and hopes to come to New York next spring. The show has been extended before opening night, as it will now play through March 1. Goodman Theatre Artistic Director Robert Falls and renowned actor Brian Dennehy bring their artistic partnership to new heights with Eugene O'Neill's haunting drama, Desire Under the Elms-marking their fifth collaboration on O'Neill's work over two decades. Falls' cast includes stage and screen stars Carla Gugino (Entourage, Spy Kids, Sin City) Pablo Schreiber (Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Awake and Sing!), Boris McGiver (The Wire) and Daniel Stewart Sherman (Broadway's Cyrano de Bergerac). The centerpiece production of Goodman Theatre's two-month 'A Global Exploration: Eugene O'Neill in the 21st Century,' Desire Under the Elms appears January 17 - March 1 in the Goodman's 856-seat Albert Ivar Theatre. For four performances only February 25 - 28, Goodman Theatre welcomes the world renowned and 'refreshingly daring' (The New York Times) Toneelgroep Amsterdam and their contemporary adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's Rouw Siert Electra (Mourning Becomes Electra). Using a unique fusion of video, television and live performance, acclaimed director Ivo van Hove 'brings new meaning to the term ?in your face' (Variety). Presented in Dutch with English supertitles, performances of Rouw Siert Electra (Mourning Becomes Electra) are scheduled February 25 - 28 in the Goodman's Owen Bruner Theatre. Modine Plays 'Atticus Finch' In Hartford's TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD Beginning 2/19

Hartford Stage, under the artistic direction of Michael Wilson, announced that acclaimed Emmy-nominated actor Matthew Modine will make his Hartford Stage debut as Atticus Finch in the eagerly anticipated stage adaptation of Harper Lee's classic novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. Hartford Stage Wilson will direct the production, which will play at the Tony Award-winning theatre February 19 - April 4. To Kill a Mockingbird is a tender portrait of a southern town, brimming with powerful lessons of tolerance, justice and quiet heroism. Scout and Jem are growing up in the Deep South during the 1930s depression. Their idyllic childhood is jolted with the realization that prejudice and bigotry rule in their small town when their father, a lawyer of principle and integrity, is asked to defend a young black man falsely accused of raping a white woman.

Gugino Departs Goodman's 'DESIRE' 2/17, Carle Plays Final Weeks

Carla Gugino's final bow as Abbie Putnam in Goodman Theatre's hit Desire Under the Elms directed by Artistic Director Robert Falls is Tuesday, February 17. Per a pre-production arrangement, Gugino departs the production to fulfill press commitments for the releases of her films Watchmen and Race to Witch Mountain, both opening in early March. Gugino's understudy Amy J. Carle assumes the role for the final two weeks of performances beginning Wednesday, February 18 at 7:30pm.

RUINED Opens at Manhattan Theatre Club 2/10

The Manhattan Theatre Club's (Lynne Meadow, Artistic Director; Barry Grove, Executive Producer) and Goodman Theatre's (Robert Falls, Artistic Director; Roche Schulfer, Executive Director) acclaimed co-production of RUINED, written by Lynn Nottage and directed by Kate Whoriskey began previews last week at MTC at New York City Center - Stage I (131 West 55th Street). The limited engagement opens tonight, Tuesday, February 10.

SPRING AWAKENING Comes To The Fabulous Fox Theater 2/10

Broadway's most talked about new musical and the biggest Tony Award?-winner in years is coming to the Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis. Spring Awakening, the 8-time Tony Award? winning Broadway musical, will play a two-week engagement from February 10-22, 2009. Curtain times for the U.S. Bank Broadway Series presentation are Tuesdays through Fridays at 8 p.m.; Saturdays at 2 & 8 p.m.; Sunday, February 15 at 2 & 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, February 22 at 2 p.m. There is also a weekday matinee on Thursday, February 19 at 1 p.m.

Two of Chicago's acclaimed off-Loop theater troupes join Goodman Theatre's 21st century exploration of Eugene O'Neill in February and March. The Hypocrites perform The Hairy Ape February 7-21, directed by Artistic Director and Founder Sean Graney, 'one of the most insightful directors now at work in Chicago' (Chicago Sun-Times), who transforms Goodman's three-tiered Owen Bruner Theatre into the various strata of an ocean liner. The Neo-Futurists, 'one of the most imaginative experimental theater ensembles in the country' (The Economist), perform Strange Interlude March 6-8, directed by Founder Greg Allen, in a production which unites audience and actors on the stage.

Goodman Theatre to Present Sea Plays Through Jan. 31

For three weekends, January 14 - 31, Goodman Theatre audiences have the rare opportunity to witness Companhia Triptal Director Andr? Garolli's acclaimed contemporary interpretation of three Eugene O'Neill Sea Plays. Performing for the first time outside their native Brazil, Companhia Triptal presents Homens ao Mar (Sea Plays), consisting of three one-act plays: Zona de Guerra (In the Zone), Longa Viagem de Volta pra Casa (The Long Voyage Home) and Cardiff (Bound East for Cardiff) in limited engagements. First performed in a historic warehouse in Brazil, Companhia Triptal's Sea Plays will transform the Goodman's Owen Theatre into a ship called the S.S. Glencairn, with each play exploring a different incident in the lives of the ship's crew. In conjunction with the Sea Plays, the Goodman also presents two special programs: a Theater Thursday event on January 15 for $30, including a reception, an artistic presentation about the play and tickets to the evening's performance of Zona de Guerra; and Andr? Garolli on the Sea Plays, a free discussion with Director Andr? Garolli and Goodman Theatre Associate Producer Steve Scott.
