Lefra Productions to Hold Auditions for May Production of BUDDY - THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY at Emperors Palace

Lefra Productions is excited to announce the staging of BUDDY - THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY at the Theatre of Marcellus at Emperors Palace from 14 May to 10 June. Written by Alan Janes to showcase a jukebox of pop hits from the late 1950s, BUDDY has been enjoyed by millions of people around the world and tells the story of the tragically short life of Buddy Holly, who along with his high-school friends, the Crickets, turned country music upside down to create some of the best rock 'n' roll songs ever written.

LA BAMBA Screens at The Granada Theatre

"Cine en Domingo" Film Series presents La Bamba on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 3:00 pm. A program of The Jurkowitz Center for Community Engagement, "Cine en Domingo" films are presented in Spanish with English subtitles. Assemblymember Monique Limon and actor Andy Valdez will host a compelling dialogue discussing important thematic elements of La Bamba, the 1987 film that tells the story of singer Ritchie Valens and his rise to fame with his chart-toping hit, "La Bamba." The "Cine en Domingo" series as a whole showcases both classic and contemporary Spanish language films, with compelling titles chosen to engage the Latino community and all who love this genre of filmmaking.

BAMcinématek To Explore the Work of Chicano Filmmakers March 16 - 22

From Friday, March 16 through Thursday, March 22 BAMcinématek explores the work of Chicano and Chicana filmmakers. The Chicano Movement of the 1960s was a time of Mexican-American political activism and a cultural renaissance in which Chicano filmmakers were emboldened to tell their own stories. The filmmakers who emerged in the 1970s and 80s represented a community that had been ignored in mainstream cinema. The series begins with trailblazing writer-director Luis Valdez, who marched on the picket lines with Caesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta, debut film Zoot Suit (1981—Mar 16), the film adaptation of the stage musical about the 1940s Los Angeles Zoot Suit Riots, was also the first Mexican-American film to be produced by a major studio. The series also includes Valdez's musical biopic of rock 'n' roll legend Ritchie Valens La Bamba (1987—Mar 17). The series also includes three films directed by Gregory Nava: El Norte (1983—Mar 18), the first independent film to be nominated for the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, about a brother and sister who escape political violence in Guatemala to make a new life for themselves in America; Mi Familia (1995—Mar 22), which follows three generations of a Mexican-American family in Los Angeles and starring Jimmy Smits; and Selena (1997—Mar 17), the biopic of Selena Quintanilla that made Jennifer Lopez a star.

Now in its 27th year, Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story tells the enduring tale of the musical icon's meteoric rise to fame and his final legendary performance at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, before his tragic and untimely death at the age of 22. In 18 short months the Texas-born boy revolutionized the face of contemporary music, influencing everyone from The Beatles to Bruce Springsteen.
