Off-Center, the most unconventional line of programming at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA) is proud to announce the selections for Bite-Size, an evening of original, short plays and performance pieces by Colorado artists, presented at BookBar and directed by Meridith C. Grundei.
THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME racked up awards in both London and NYC, including winning the Tony Award for best play in 2015. Just last year the Broadway tour stopped in Minneapolis, which I saw and was impressed by the clever and inventive storytelling. Now available for regional productions, Mixed Blood Theatre is bringing us their take on the play. The West End/Broadway production was very tech-heavy, and I was curious what this story with a smaller-scale production and in a smaller house would look like. It turns out I like it even better. The 15-person Broadway cast has been reduced to just 9, with very smart casting and direction. There are still some pretty impressive tech effects, but also some great low-tech effects that all serve this story of a 15-year-old boy with an unspecified autism-like condition who goes on an epic journey in search of the truth.
In 2011, Mixed Blood Theatre launched Radical Hospitality, a no-cost admission program created to remove the financial barrier for audience participation in the theatre. While Radical Hospitality is certainly the theatre's most widely-recognized access initiative, founding Artistic Director, Jack Reuler, the staff and Board have been redefining what it means to be radically hospitable for the entirety of Mixed Blood's existence.
Christopher Boone, a young man on the autism spectrum, sets out to investigate the bizarre death of a neighbor's dog, setting into motion a series of events that expose far greater mysteries.
Mixed Blood Theatre today announced the cast for SAFE AT HOME-a site specific theatrical event performed at CHS Field in St. Paul. Directed by Mixed Blood Artistic Director Jack Reuler and featuring 18 actors, this 9-scene thriller uses baseball to examine flawed US immigration policies, racial politics, America's obsession with celebrity, and the collision of personal ethics with massive entertainment and media dollars.
Back for the 25th Anniversary season, Phamaly Theatre Company presents its seventh raucous, "differently-abled sketch comedy" with Vox PHAMALIA: Pity Pity Bang Bang. Co-written by Jeremy Palmer, Phamaly's own actors with disabilities and director Edith Weiss, this year features sketches & monologues that are hilarious, touching, edgy and humanizing in their honesty.
