79 Massachusetts High School Students to Compete in 2013 POETRY OUT LOUD, 3/2-3 & 10

Seventy-nine students from across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts will compete at four regional semi-final competitions as part of the eighth annual Poetry Out Loud March 2 and 3. Competitions will be held in Boston, Framingham, Springfield, and on Cape Cod. Each participating student recently won his or her individual school's competition in order to advance. The winners will advance to the State Finals on Sunday, March 10 at Boston's Old South Meeting House. All upcoming competitions are free and open to the public.

Fifty-four years after its Broadway premiere, the Huntington Theatre Company presents A Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry's landmark family classic about deferred dreams. Liesl Tommy (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Ruined - IRNE Award for Best Director and Production) returns to the Huntington to helm the production that features Leroy McClain (the title role in Hamlet at California Shakespeare Theater) as Walter Lee Younger and Kimberly Scott (Molly Cunningham in Joe Turner's Come and Gone - Tony and Drama Desk Award nominations) as matriarch Lena Younger.

Theater for the New City (Crystal Field, Executive Director) will present Lesser America's World Premiere of Nick Jones' (Jollyship the Whiz-bang with Ars Nova/The Public; The Coward with Lincoln Center) Trevor, February 28-March 17 at Theater for the New City (155 1st Avenue between 9th and 10th Street). The production will be directed by Moritz von Stuelpnagel (Hand to God with EST; My Base and Scurvy Heart with Studio 42) and will feature Steven Boyer* (Hand to God; Jollyship the Whiz-Bang), Geneva Carr* (Hand to God; Boise), Nathaniel Kent (The Three Seagulls at HERE; Doctor Faustus at The Brick), Andy Nogasky*, Shawn Randall* (Big Tex at EST; Blue Man Group), Amy Staats* (One Thing I Like To Say Is with Clubbed Thumb) and Colleen Werthmann* (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson; The Mistakes Madeline Made). The creative team will include Set Design by Andrew Boyce, Props Design by Sarah Dowling, Costume Design by Elizabeth Groth, Lighting Design by Mike Inwood, and Fight Direction by Robert Westley. *Actor appears courtesy of the Actors' Equity Association.
Huntington Theatre Company Names Melinda Lopez a Playwright-in-Residence

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded the Huntington Theatre Company $245,000 so that Huntington Playwriting Fellow Melinda Lopez (Sonia Flew, Becoming Cuba) can join the company's full-time staff as playwright-in-residence. The award is one of 14 residency grants at theatre companies around the US announced this month. Lopez will begin her residency on July 1, 2013.

The Huntington Theatre Company brings Thornton Wilder's Pulitzer Prize-winning Our Town home to Boston on its 75th anniversary in a landmark staging by Obie Award winner David Cromer (Tribes, Adding Machine). The remount of the acclaimed New York production that features a homegrown cast will inaugurate the Huntington's use of the intimate, 250-seat Roberts Studio Theatre in the Huntington's Calderwood Pavilion at the BCA.

The first adaptation in any medium to be authorized by the Ellison Trust, the Jefferson Award-winning script is by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Oren Jacoby. Christopher McElroen, award-winner and co-founder of the Classical Theatre of Harlem, directs. Teagle F. Bougere delivers "a tour-de-force performance" (BroadwayWorld.com) in the iconic title role.

I daresay that playwright Jon Kern probably found a previously untried twist in the old staple of “meeting cute” in a romantic comedy by having the central couple of his play be a suicide bomber on a mission to sacrifice himself, and take as many lives as possible with him, on the observation deck of the Empire State Building, and a fellow terrorist helping to achieve his goal as revenge against an American drone attack that killed her husband on her wedding day when the celebration was mistaken for a Taliban gathering.

Huntington Theatre Company will honor longtime Huntington supporters Trustee Judi Krupp and her husband Douglas and visionary Our Town director David Cromer with its highest honor, the Wimberly Award, at the 2013 Spotlight Spectacular gala on Monday, April 22, 2013. Sloan Foundation Initiative commissions for Manhattan Theatre Club. This year's six commissioned writers are April de Angelis (Jumpy), Nick Jones (The Coward), Heidi Schreck (Creature), Melissa Ross (Thinner Than Water), Sarah Treem (A Feminine Ending), and Bess Wohl (Barcelona).
