An Evening With… are three of the most powerful words in the entertainment world and they are so often posted and signify an event that can only happen at the Friars Club. In the early days of the club it was an evening with James Cagney, George M. Cohan and other show business greats. Then came evenings with Milton Berle, Frank Sinatra, and many other legends.

Alex Leonard is a classy performer. His relaxed, minimalist style and adherence to vocals as written take one back to an agreeable past. Jazz riffs weave around rather than obscure melody. Lyric meaning is gracefully maintained. Aided and abetted by expert veterans Jay Leonhart on bass and Al Gafa on guitar, Leonard saluted the great Nat King Cole at Pangea on January 18 with a bit of history, a couple of illuminating anecdotes, and signature songs.

On Sunday December 4 Irish tenor Dennis McNeil presented The Christmas Show at The Lounge of The Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa Beach to an enthusiastic sellout crowd. This marked his 44th appearance in this venue, so he must be doing something right. He has a multitude of fans who keep coming back five or six times a year. A former opera singer, McNeil has sung for Presidents and in concert venues, including stadiums, around the world. He can adapt himself to any venue, and of course, in a room of this size that accommodates 100, he gets the chance to be up close, warm and personal and like most Irishmen, tell stories, some funny and a few... deliciously off-color. Throughout the 90-minute set, McNeil held his audience spellbound with his magnificent vocal range, a slew of Christmas songs - both pop and religious - and candid observations about the commercialism of Christmas. He was accompanied by skilled musical director Ed Martel, with whom he has had a long and fruitful association.
He's been swinging and singing the holiday season at The Carlyle for the past 11 years, and Tyrell's songs, warmth, good feelings and musicianship have never been more impressively on display then in his 12th year. Last night he welcomed New Yorkers to his 2016 engagement at the legendary hotel. You can only compare a Steve Tyrell performance to the happiness an audience must have experienced when seeing such super stars as Perry Como, Dean Martin, Glen Campbell or similar male vocalists. Singers who kept their audiences tunefully engrossed and mentally jubilant during their shows. The Grammy Award-winner and two-time Emmy nominee has settled in for a five-week run at Cafe Carlyle.
