The 2011 National Book Awardsfinalists have just been announced. The Winners in Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, and Young People's Literature will be announced at the 62nd National Book Awards Benefit Dinner and Ceremony at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City on Wednesday, November 16. Actor, writer, and musician John Lithgow will host the event. Poet John Ashbery will receive the National Book Foundation's Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, to be presented by poet Ann Lauterbach. Mitchell Kaplan, co-founder of the Miami Book Fair International, will receive the Foundation's Literarian Award for Outstanding Contribution to the American Literary Community, to be presented by writer Walter Mosley.

Mellon Foundation Invests in Dance Studies

Northwestern University, in partnership with Brown and Stanford, has received a $1,420,700 grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for a multi-year, multi-school project that will fund postdoctoral fellowships and weeklong summer seminars designed to advance the field of dance studies.

Merging the vanguard of Polish theatre artists with America's most innovative contemporary music composers, Mozart's Sister tells the story of the keyboard virtuoso, composer, and child prodigy in her own right - Nannerl Mozart. This other Mozart toured throughout Europe, performing side by side with her brother Amadeus, to equal acclaim. Yet none of her compositions have survived and today hardly anyone knows she existed. Using Nannerl's own letters and those of her family, the performance investigates how this female prodigy, this Mozart, faded from the world - and whether this loss was inevitable.
