FirstWorks, a Rhode Island non-profit dedicated to building community through world-class arts announces the New England premiere of 'Some Favored Nook,' a song cycle featuring an original composition by Providence-based composer Eric Nathan. The work is based on the historic 24-year correspondence between poet Emily Dickinson and Thomas Wentworth Higginson; an essayist, abolitionist, women's rights advocate, Colonel of the first black regiment during the Civil War, and who notably was instrumental in publishing the first collection of Dickinson's poetry after her death.
Trinity Church Wall Street's Time's Arrow festival (March 5-9), known for its signature combination of early and new music, focuses this spring on amplifying the voices of female artists and exploring sensitive contemporary themes. The centerpiece of the festival is a juxtaposition of two musical portraits of the biblical figure Susanna: Handel's oratorio Susanna, and Artemisia, an opera by Laura Elise Schwendinger, with a libretto by Ginger Strand. Complementing these large-scale pieces is a concert centered on works by Barbara Strozzi, the most prolific composer of secular vocal music in Venice in the mid-17th century and a renowned poet who likely wrote many of her own texts. Performed by Trinity Choir soprano Molly Netter, the concert also features world premieres by Jessica Meyer, Doug Balliett, Alyssa Weinberg, and others (March 8). A Pipes at One concert on that same day, featuring Trinity Associate Organist Janet Yieh, will also reflect the Time's Arrow theme, with compositions by Rachel Laurin, Florence Price, Lili Boulanger, Clara Schumann, and others. All performances take place in the intimate surroundings of St. Paul's Chapel, a Georgian-era gem just a few blocks north of Trinity, and the oldest public building in continuous use in Manhattan.

Music Director Thierry Fischer and President & CEO Paul Meecham today announced the Utah Symphony's 2019-20 season, with highlights including multimedia concert experiences featuring the twelve movements of Messiaen's Des canyons aux toiles (From the canyons to the stars), the release of Berlioz and Prokofiev recordings on the Hyperion Records and Reference Recordings respectively, and a celebration of Beethoven's 250th birthday in 2020. Additional highlights include the return of American composer Andrew Norman to present three of his orchestral works and work with young Utah musicians in his second year as Composer-in-Association; a gala concert with violinist Joshua Bell celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Utah Symphony's first-ever performance, which took place on May 8, 1940; and a tribute to Hispanic Heritage that includes music by Latin-American composers conducted by guest artist Carlos Miguel Prieto. Utah Symphony and Utah Opera unveil a series of creative projects to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Golden Spike, where the final railway spike north of the Great Salt Lake connected the rails of America's First Transcontinental Railway at Promontory Summit in May 1869. Can a musical drama set on a grim WW I battlefield make an audience feel good? Those working on the San Diego Opera's staging of All Is Calm: the Christmas Truce of 1914 are certain it can. The work tells the true story of the spontaneous unofficial truce between WWI enemies who left their trenches and entered the no-man's land between them to join in a celebration of the Christmas holidays. Peter Rothstein wrote the drama for his Minneapolis-based company Theatre Latte Da, and based it on material from the period, the most important of which is the verbatim text of letters and war journals written by soldiers who participated in the truce. The cast sings many songs popular during the war and a few traditional Christmas carols. All were arranged by Erick Lichte and Timothy C. Takach, and are sung a cappella in the English, German and French languages of the soldiers. Vanessa Dinning has taken on the challenge of coaching in nearly 20 different dialects.
Long-time westsider musicians Mari Kimura (violinist/composer) and Bruce Brubaker (piano) will join up for 'CODEX to CAGE' an eclectic concert program in the heart of Upper West Side on Monday, December 10 at 7:30 PM at North of History, 445 Columbus Avenue (81-82 Street). Kimura will perform solo violin works ranging from Bach to Ioanis Xenakis to works of her own. Brubaker, who heads the Piano program at the New England Conservatory and is a renowned interpreter of Philip Glass and Terry Riley, will perform works from his repertoire, including 'Codex Faenza,' a 15th-century manuscript that Brubaker has arranged. Kimura and Brubaker will join forces in their interpretation of John Cage's 'Fontana Mix' to conclude the concert.

The Utah Symphony under Music Director Thierry Fischer launches a recording cycle of works by French composer Camille Saint-Saens on Hyperion Records. This three-volume set will be the first complete, commercial recording of the composer's five symphonies by an American orchestra, as well as the orchestra's first recording project with the independent British label. Volume 1 is released on Friday, December 28 and comprises Symphony No. 3 in C minor ("Organ"), featuring Paul Jacobs; "Danse Bacchanale" from Act III of the composer's opera Samson et Dalila; and Trois tableaux symphoniques d'apres La foi, based on the composer's incidental music for a play by Eugene Brieux. The MET Live in HD presents for the first time the contemporary opera of Marnie, with music by composer Nico Muhly and libretto by Nicholas Wright. This co-production with the English National Opera is based on Winston Graham's novel, which inspired Alfred Hitchcock to direct the thriller of the same title.
