Mark DeGarmo Dance will honor dance writer DEBORAH JOWITT with the 2016 “Educational Visionary” Lifetime Achievement Award to celebrate her many accomplishments. Ms. Jowitt danced with notable names such as José Limon and Anna Sokolow, choreographed works shown in venues in both the United States and overseas, published articles in The New York Times, The Village Voice and Dance Magazine, among others, and has lectured, taught and conducted workshops at universities in the U.S. and abroad. The award is presented to “visionaries who have promoted innovation in education through the arts.” Fellow dance writer, dancer and choreographer, Gus Solomons, jr., will present Ms. Jowitt's award and comedian Nat Towsen, host of Nat Towsen's Downtown Variety Hour, will serve as Master of Ceremonies throughout the evening. New York's “Dance Party of the Year” includes hors d'oeuvres, drinks, a performance by our students, a dance lesson from our teaching artists and a silent auction featuring gift certificates, dinners, vacations, and more.

Stage Rights announced this week that A Scythe of Time is the recipient of the 2016 Stage Rights/NYMF Publishing Award. Stage Rights presented the award to book writer Alan Harris and composer/lyricist Mark Swanson at Sunday night's star-studded gala. Stage Rights and The New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) created the publishing award in 2013, and it is presented annually to one or more of the musicals taking part in the festival. Performance rights for A Scythe of Time will be available through Stage Rights in 2017.

The Bronx Opera will celebrate its 50th season in 2017 with two different takes on the story of William Shakespeare's lovable rogue knight, Sir John Falstaff: the rarely-performed Sir John in Love, by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (January 14, 15, 21, 22); and Verdi's Falstaff, the final, miraculous opera by the Italian master (April 29, 20, May 6, 7). Each production will be performed both in the Bronx, at Lehman College's Lovinger Theatre, and in Manhattan, at Hunter College's Kaye Playhouse. This will be BxO's third presentation of Sir John in Love (they gave the U.S. Premiere in 1978) and their first of Falstaff, and both operas will be performed in English.
