Target Creates Digital Advisory Council

Rhinebeck Writers Retreat Announces 26 Writers of 9 New Musicals Selected for This Summer

Kathy Evans, Founding Executive Director, announced the nine musicals and twenty-six writers selected for the 2014 Rhinebeck Writers Retreat, its fourth year of providing working retreats for musical theatre writers. For nine consecutive weeks beginning June 29th, each writing team will have an individual weeklong residency in Rhinebeck, New York to write their musical. They are provided with a private home, transportation, food, and a stipend. All costs are fully funded by donors including The ASCAP Foundation, The Dramatists Guild Fund, and The Noel Coward Foundation. Writers participating this year include Broadway's Mindi Dickstein (Little Women), this year's Kleban Prize winner Nathan Tysen (Burnt Part Boys), and Peter Mills, past winner of the Kleban, Fred Ebb Award, and Richard Rodgers prize. The musicals' subjects cover 19th century nautical mysteries, 20th century fairy tales, a 1970's gay bar, and modern-day meth addicts. Every score is original and styles include 16th century Renaissance, big band, folk, rock, and electronic music.

4th Wall Theatre to Present AVENUE Q, 6/6-15

4th Wall Theatre, a non union professional theatre in Bloomfield, NJ is presenting Avenue Q which opened Off-Broadway in March 2003, co-produced by The New Group and the Vineyard Theatre, and transferred to Broadway in July 2003. 4th Wall's production will be directed by Kate Swan. Avenue Q tells the story of a recent college grad named Princeton who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. He soon discovers that although the residents seem nice, it's clear that this is not your ordinary neighborhood. Together, Princeton and his new-found friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life.

92Y announces a discussion with the stars and creative team of Mothers and Sons, the acclaimed new play recently nominated for two Tony Awards - Best Play and Best Actress in a Leading Role. Panelists include four-time Tony Award-winning playwright Terrence McNally, and director Sheryl Kaller (Tony nominee) along with stars Tyne Daly (a Tony and six-time Emmy Award-winner) and Bobby Steggert (Tony nominee), along with moderator Perez Hilton.

CLOWN BAR Will Transfer to The Box, 6/14

After a critically acclaimed and extended run in 2013, Award-winning Pipeline Theatre Company will present an encore engagement of CLOWN BAR by Adam Szymkowicz, with music & additional lyrics by Adam Overett. Originally announced to return to its original venue, the production will instead transfer to longtime clown haunt The Box beginning June 14. Opening is slated for June 21.

National Geographic Channel Sets INSIDE COMBAT RESCUE: THE LAST STAND for 6/15

This dramatic two-hour special, premiering on Sunday, June 15 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, offers a unique, firsthand perspective of the final stages of Operation Enduring Freedom through the eyes of the men and women on the ground and in the air, fighting to protect us.

Official: Jane Horrocks & Khan Din to Lead EAST IS EAST at Trafalgar Transformed, Begin. 4 October

Award-winning playwright Ayub Khan Din's first play, East is East, which premiered at the Royal Court and was later turned into a much-loved feature film, returns to the London stage after 17 years. This hilarious and ever-pertinent modern classic about growing up in multiracial England will star the multi award-winning stage and screen actress Jane Horrocks (Young Vic's Annie Get Your Gun,Sunshine on Leith, The Rise And Fall Of Little Voice, Absolutely Fabulous) as Ella Khan, one of the greatest female roles written for modern theatre.

Lehmann Maupin Showcases Work by Liu Wei and More at Frieze New York 2014 This Weekend

Lehmann Maupin (Booth C13) will participate in the third edition of Frieze New York this weekend, May 9-12, with a vibrant, multi-artist booth, showcasing work by Liu Wei, Angel Otero, and Nari Ward. Additionally, the gallery will be debuting work by the newest artist to join Lehmann Maupin, French-Algerian artist Kader Attia.

THEY CALL ME Q Opens Tomorrow in San Francisco Prior to Off-Broadway Run

The award-winning play THEY CALL ME Q is set to play two performances only in San Francisco this week prior to making its Off-Broadway premiere. Written and performed by Qurrat Ann Kadwani, THEY CALL ME Q will play May 8th at 8 PM and May 10th at 2 PM at San Francisco's Stage Werx Theatre (446 Valencia Street). New York performances will begin May 19th, with the Opening Night set for Wednesday, June 4th at St. Luke's Theatre in the heart of the Theatre District.

Keen Company's Keen Teens Begins Performances 5/9

The Drama Desk and Obie Award-winning Keen Company presents Keen Teens, the educational theatre partnership between Off-Broadway's Keen Company and the theatrical publishing company Samuel French. The writers for the program's eighth season are Kristoffer Diaz, Halley Feiffer, and Kenny Finkle, who have been commissioned to write thirty-minute, large cast plays, which will be produced with student actors Off-Broadway.

The Man Behind the Curtain for NNE Rep's ARMS AND THE MAN, 6/5-14

For its tenth season, the Northern New England Repertory Theatre Company (NNE Rep) presents George Bernard Shaw's romantic comedy Arms and the Man on the Sawyer Center stage at Colby-Sawyer College. In this delicious romantic confection, Shaw's barbed wit targets themes of love, honor, and illusions, and serves up laughs aplenty at the foibles of human nature. NNE Rep's production of Arms and the Man will run for seven performances from June 5th through June 14th.

Studio 42 Hosts 3rd Annual Unproducible Smackdown Today

Today, May 3rd, Studio 42 will present the Unproducible works of Meghan Deans - winner of the '13 Unproducible Smackdown (Ashore), Eric Dufault (Year of the Rooster), Brett Epstein - Fan Slam winner (I Loved Sam Stone), Leah Nanako Winkler (Death for Sydney Black), and Lauren Yee (Ching Chong Chinaman). Direction by Liz Carlson (The Playwrights Realm's Lottie in the Late Afternoon), Matt Dickson (INTAR's The Lowest Form of Writing), John Giampietro (EST's Year of the Rooster), and Jesse Jou (Rising Circle Theater Collectives's Say You Heard My Echo). The plays of the Smackdown are produced by Alyssa Anderson, Ying Le, Greg Nobile, Meghan Pressman, and Lico Whitfield.

People's Light & Theatre Announces New Play Commissions

People's Light is proud to announce new play commissions for Eisa Davis, Colman Domingo, Kate Fodor, Karen Hartman, Dominique Morisseau, and Kathryn Petersen. These six playwrights are the first participants in our New Play Frontiers residency program. New Play Frontiers is an initiative to conceive, develop, and produce new plays that explore our American identity through stories of deep meaning to specific populations in the five-county region that surround our theatre.
