Encompass New Opera Theatre will present two one-act operas based on texts by Stein, Virgil Thomson's Capital Capitals and Ned Rorem's Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters.

On Sunday, November 14, 2010, The National Arts Club was the site of a Gala evening honoring Richard Maltby, Jr., David Shire and John Weidman. The VIP guests enjoyed cocktails and a repast featuring the culinary artistry of the talented chefs at The National Arts Club. Guests were then entertained with a variety of music by David Shire and Richard Maltby,Jr. with selections from the musicals of Scott Frankel, Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman and performed by Stars of Broadway, Television and Film, including BD Wong, Karen Ziemba, Mario Cantone, Lynne Wintersteller , Julia Lema and Fred Applegate. Memorable Recollections were provided by theatre greats Susan Stroman and Gala honorary Chairs Maury Yeston and Sheldon Harnick. After the awards presentation guests enjoyed Champagne, coffee and a magnificent array of desserts.

Join us as we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Broadway premiere of FOUR SAINTS IN THREE ACTS, written by the creative genius Gertrude Stein and the inimitable Virgil Thomson, presented in collaboration with Nancy Rhodes (Artistic Director, Encompass New Opera Theatre), poet and librettist Karren Alenier, and the CUNY Ph.D. Program in Music. Four Saints in Three Acts holds a unique place in the American avant-garde opera of the 20th century. It will be honored in a daylong event by leading scholars and practitioners in the field of avant-garde literature and performance, with a screening and discussions. The highlight of the celebration is a staged oratorio version of Four Saints in Three Acts prepared by Virgil Thomson himself, directed by Nancy Rhodes, and presented by Encompass New Opera Theatre, with 8 principles, a 24-member chorus, 3 dancers, and a 16 piece orchestra conducted by Mara Waldman.
