Photo Flash: Sneak Peek at La Jolla Playhouse's WoW Festival, 10/3

La Jolla Playhouse, nationally-renowned for its commitment to the development of new work and new theatrical forms, is pleased to announce additional projects for its inaugural Without Walls (WoW) Festival of site-based work, running October 3 - 6, 2013. This one-of-a-kind Festival will showcase artists and events occurring simultaneously in and around the Playhouse Theatre District, presented by the Playhouse as well as partner institutions UC San Diego (UCSD) and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD). Galerie Lelong to Present Nalini Malani's IN SEARCH OF VANISHED BLOOD, Begin. 9/6

Nalini Malani's immersive video/shadow play, In Search of Vanished Blood, will premier in New York on September 6, 2013. This large-scale multi-media work was a highlight of dOCUMENTA 13 held in Kassel, Germany during the summer of 2012. Malani, widely considered the pioneer of video art in India, continues themes explored throughout her illustrious career: violence, the feminine, and the politics of national identity. The artist will be present for the opening which will be held on Friday, September 6 from 6-8pm.

Chicago Human Rhythm Project's 23rd Rhythm World Festival Kicks Off Today

Highlighting the depth and breadth of national and international tap artistry, Chicago Human Rhythm Project (CHRP), the nation's premier presenter of American tap dance and contemporary percussive arts, presents Rhythm World, the oldest and most comprehensive festival of American tap and contemporary percussive arts in the world, beginning today, July 22, and running through August 4 in downtown Chicago.

Chicago Humanities Festival Unveils Full Fall 2013 Performing Arts Lineup; Kicks Off 10/13

The Chicago Humanities Festival (CHF) announced today several of its performing arts presentations for the 2013 Fall Festival, which will explore the theme of Animal: What Makes Us Human, Oct. 13, 20, and Nov. 1-10 at venues across Chicago. CHF will present more performing arts offerings than ever before, spotlighting music, theater, performance art, and dance. Offerings include: a performance of Voice of the Whale featuring flutist and founder of International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) Claire Chase; Chicago-based Jazz band The Fat Babies; pianist Anthony Molinaro; two theater productions:Rainpan 43's homage to magic Elephant Room and Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour's White Rabbit, Red Rabbit; a double feature event with performance artists Holly Hughes and Deke Weaver; and an exploration of South Asian myths by Chicago's Kalapriya Dance.

BANG ON A CAN's 12th Annual Summer Music Festival at MASS MoCA Set for Now thru 8/3

From tonight, July 17 through August 3, 2013, MASS MoCA (the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams, MA) explodes with the sounds of the 12th Annual Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival at MASS MoCA, a utopian residency program dedicated entirely to the creation, study, and performance of the most adventurous music of our time. A three-week intensive of public performances, recitals, and lectures, the Festival will be attended by over 50 cutting-edge composers and performers from around the globe, including 37 fellows selected from a pool of over 250 applicants from 17 countries.

Free Chicago Dancing Festival Tickets Available Today

Tickets for the 7th annual Chicago Dancing Festival, the 'Free-to-All' Festival at venues across downtown Chicago, become available to the general public next week, beginning today, July 16 at noon. During the Festival's five-day run there are five completely free performance showcases, though tickets for indoor events must be reserved in advance. Co-produced by internationally renowned choreographer and native Chicagoan Lar Lubovitch and highly esteemed Chicago dancer Jay Franke, the 2013 Chicago Dancing Festival features top ballet, modern, ethnic and rhythmic dance companies from Chicago and across the country, set to take place August 20 - 24.

Logan Center to Welcome Marc Bamuthi Joseph's WORD BECOMES FLESH, 8/6

Award-winning hip hop poet Marc Bamuthi Joseph's powerful Word Becomes Flesh returns to Chicago, re-invented with an ensemble cast from a new generation, in a one-night-only performance, at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts Performance Hall at the University of Chicago, 915 E. 60th Street,Tuesday, August 6, at 7:30 p.m. Featuring a series of performed letters to an unborn son, Word Becomes Flesh uses spoken word, dance and live music to document nine months of pregnancy from a young single father's perspective.

Sundance Institute Announces NEXT WEEKEND Kick-Off Event Double-Bill, 8/8-8/11

Sundance Institute today announced that the first-ever NEXT WEEKEND film festival, Aug. 8-11, 2013 at venues throughout Los Angeles, will kick off with an outdoor screening of Chris Smith's iconic cult documentary American Movie and Mark Borchardt's horror film Coven Aug. 8 at Cinespia at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Chris Smith will introduce the films. Tickets ($12) are on sale now at www.ticketfly.com/purchase/event/312351. Sundance Institute Members will have priority admittance via a members-only line for this event at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. This screening is co-presented with Acura.

Twelve short works premiere during two performances today, July 6, 2013, beginning at 5 pm and 8 pm.

David Richard Gallery in Santa Fe Presents 'Camino Real'

David Richard Gallery will present 'Camino Real,' a selection of gouache and charcoal works on paper by Michael Cook that were inspired by pavement surfaces while traveling the roads of New Mexico. The exhibition will be presented July 2 - July 27, 2013 with an artist reception on Friday, July 5 from 5:00-7:00 PM at the gallery located on 544 South Guadalupe Street, Santa Fe, New Mexico 87501 (phone 505-983-9555) in the Santa Fe Railyard Arts District.

Sundance Institute to Kick Off LUMA Theatre Directors Retreat in Arles, July 29

Sundance Institute and the LUMA Foundation today announced that the two organizations will collaborate to host the Sundance Institute | LUMA Foundation Theatre Directors Retreat at Domaine de l'Armelliere, July 29 - August 9, in Arles, France. Under the supervision of Philip Himberg, Artistic Director of the Sundance Institute Theatre Program, Producing Director Christopher Hibma and Program Associate Anne Kauffman, the Retreat will be the first theatre director-centered residency at the Institute.

Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago Presents Jose Lerma, 'Parallelogram' July 2 - December 3

Born in Spain, raised in Puerto Rico, and now living in New York and Chicago, artist José Lerma is best known for producing playful, intricately rendered portraits of long-lost historical figures. In recent years, he has expanded his painting practice to include repurposing nontraditional materials such as reflective fabric and industrial carpet, and incorporating found objects such as electric keyboards and military parachutes. In dialogue with changing artistic practices over the past decade, Lerma not only explores various uses of materials for his paintings but also mulls over the medium's relationship to history with a capital “H.”

Sondheim Artscape Prize Exhibition on View at the Walters Art Museum, Now thru August 11

The Walters Art Museum and the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts (BOPA) present the Sondheim Artscape Prize: 2013 Finalists. On view at the Walters today, June 29-August 11, 2013, the exhibition showcases artwork by the finalists for the annual Janet & Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize, a $25,000 fellowship that is given each year to a visual artist or visual artist collaborators living and working in the Greater Baltimore region. M&T Bank has partnered with BOPA to establish the M&T Bank Sondheim Finalists' Awards, which provide a $2,500 honorarium for each of the remaining finalists not selected for the fellowship.

Simon Fujiwara's STUDIO PIETA (KING KONG KOMPLEX) Opens Tomorrow at Andrea Rosen Gallery

Andrea Rosen Gallery is thrilled to present the first New York solo exhibition by Simon Fujiwara, a young artist who has achieved exceptional recognition and acclaim across Europe and Asia, with forthcoming shows at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Palais de Tokyo, Mori Art Museum and recent solo exhibitions at Tate St Ives (2012), and at the Stoschek Collection, Düsseldorf (2010). He is known for his autobiographical explorations of identity and sexuality that blend fact and fiction into rich, absorbing narratives. His complex installations incorporate sculpture, performance, video and photographic elements to create fully imagined scenarios that underscore the interdependence of personal history and more universal narratives.
