Arena's Downstairs Series Continues With New Works By Local Favorites & More

The Downstairs New Play Reading Series is a demonstration of Arena's longstanding commitment to the development of new works and to the support of American artists. Arena Stage is proud to announce the 10th year of the Downstairs Series, which includes new works by Arena favorites Tazewell Thompson (director of Arena's M. Butterfly, Yellowman), Psalmayene 24 (Imagination Stage's Zomo the Rabbit) and fresh new voice Seamus Sullivan.

the stageFARM has announced that Evan Cabnet has replaced Alex Kilgore as director of The Gingerbread House by Mark Schultz, in its world premiere. A visiting production at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater (224 Waverly Place), The Gingerbread House opens officially on Saturday evening, April 18th at 8 p.m.

Kathy Bates to Star in 'Blind Side'

Variety is reporting that stage and screen actress Kathy Bates will star in football drama 'The Blind Side' opposite Sandra Bullock with John Lee Hancock directing from his own script. Warner Bros.-based Alcon Entertainment is financing and producing reports the trade paper. Gil Netter's producing along with Alcon co-toppers Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove while Molly Smith, Erwin Stoff and Tim Bourne will exec produce.

Restaged & Redesigned CROWNS Comes To Arena Stage 3/27

Crowns is back in town, and with direction and choreography by Kenneth Lee Roberson (Broadway's Avenue Q, Arena's Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill) and musical direction by Grammy nominee e'Marcus Harper, this soulful musical will be bigger than ever in the Lincoln Theatre. Arena favorites Marva Hicks (The Women of Brewster Place) and E. Faye Butler (Dinah Was, Ain't Misbehavin') are joined by NaTasha Yvette Williams (Broadway's The Color Purple), Mary Millben, Kara Tameika Watkins, Phillip Boykin and Zurin Villanueva. Howard University student Villanueva was discovered in Arena's January 'Finding Yolanda' one-day casting search, and this production marks her debut professional performance.

Arena Stage Announces Edgar Dobie As New Managing Director

Arena Stage Artistic Director Molly Smith announced that the Board of Trustees has appointed Edgar Dobie as the new Managing Director of the theater. With roots in non-profit theater management in the U.S. and Canada, Dobie is a Tony Award-winning commercial producer who will begin with Arena Stage at the end of March.

NIGHT FOR A DAY & More Join MTC's Lineup For 7@7 Series

Manhattan Theatre Club is pleased to announce the lineup for its 7@7 reading series. Now in its eleventh year, this free rehearsed reading series is dedicated to the support and development of new works. The 2009 lineup features six new plays and a musical, including works by two playwrights previously produced by MTC and one MTC-commissioned playwright.

Jay Goede Joins Cast Of LOOPED At Arena Stage 5/29-6/28

As playwright Matthew Lombardo continues to develop the upcoming Arena Stage production of Looped starring four-time Emmy Award-winning Valerie Harper (Rhoda on The Mary Tyler Moore Show) as Tallulah Bankhead, a casting change has taken place. Jay Goede, known for his work on Broadway in Angels in America, A Year with Frog and Toad and Sex and Longing, will now play opposite Harper in the pre-Broadway staging, directed by Rob Ruggiero at Arena Stage at the Lincoln Theatre May 29 through June 28, 2009. Full release to follow at a later date.

Arena Stage Presents Maureen McGovern in A Long and Winding

As part of the Arena Presents series, Maureen McGovern comes to Arena Stage with A Long and Winding Road, an entertaining and introspective theatrical concert based on her recent album of the same name. Co-conceived and written by McGovern and director Philip Himberg, with musical direction by Jeffrey D. Harris and production design by Clifton Taylor, A Long and Winding Road is a tribute to the early works of Jimmy Webb, Carole King, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Randy Newman, Paul McCartney and other ground-breaking singer/songwriters from the 1960s and ?70s.

Robert Spano Will Lead The ASO In Haydn's THE CREATION

Music Director Robert Spano will lead the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Chorus in an ASO Theater of a Concert presentation of Haydn's The Creation. Set designer Anne Patterson and Projection Designer Adam Larsen, whose work has enhanced the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's performances of St. John Passion and Gorecki's Third Symphony, return to design Joseph Haydn's The Creation in Atlanta Symphony Hall on February 26 and 28, 2008 at 8:00 pm. Soloists include soprano Janice Chandler, tenor Thomas Cooley, and bass Derrick Parker.
