Despite all the evidence to the contrary, chivalry isn't dead, but it certainly has to fight to survive. As long as chivalry, kindness, and optimism are challenged, the story of Don Quixote will continue to be told. Perhaps that's one of the reasons behind Austin Playhouse's decision to open their 2013-2014 season with Man of La Mancha. Whatever the reason, the production is highly entertaining and a stunning feast for the eyes, though a couple performances could be tighter and more effective.

Today in 1972, the first Broadway revival of Man of La Mancha opened at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre, where it ran for 140 performances. Man of La Mancha is a musical with a book by Dale Wasserman, lyrics by Joe Darion and music by Mitch Leigh. It is adapted from Wasserman's non-musical 1959 teleplay I, Don Quixote, which was in turn inspired by Miguel de Cervantes's seventeenth century masterpiece Don Quixote. It tells the story of the 'mad' knight, Don Quixote, as a play within a play, performed by Cervantes and his fellow prisoners as he awaits a hearing with the Spanish Inquisition. The original 1965 Broadway production ran for 2,328 performances and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The Company of Pittsburgh has announced their first full season - featuring two Tony-nominated musicals and a host of professional, local Pittsburgh talent.
The Spanish Inquisition was a harrowing and dark time in history. It has been the fodder for countless novels, plays, and books. Yet, I never had much faith that a musical would be a good medium to explore that horrific era. I figured I wouldn't enjoy the 1965 musical adaptation of Miguel de Cervantes Don Quixote. Certainly some of the classics appeal to me, but the darker, rawer, more edgy musicals are the ones that I really love. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think upon seeing MAN OF LA MANCHA for the first time that it would find a place in the Parthenon of my favorite musicals. However, Theatre Under the Stars' (TUTS) marvelous production has ensured that this gem of a show will forever have a safe and warm spot in my heart.
