The Bonstelle Theatre closes its 2014-15 Season at Wayne State's Midtown theatre with the Tony Award-winning Urinetown: The Musical, playing tonight, April 17 - 26. A hit on Broadway and in London's West End, the wickedly smart book and lyrics satirize crony capitalism, while the score parodies popular musicals. Written by Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis, it was originally produced on Broadway in September, 2001 by the Araca Group and Dodger Theatricals in association with TheaterDreams, Inc., and Lauren Mitchell.
One thing I really love about STOMP is that no matter how many times you've seen it, there are always a few new bits thrown in for you to enjoy. It's a constantly evolving show, although you can bet it will always begin with the troupe using their brooms to demonstrate how common items can be utilized to produce music and magic. Productions have been touring the world with various participants for so many years now that it's even become a touchstone for parents, who have already experienced it, to take their children to see it for the first time. My own son has seen it at least three times, but has grown to appreciate it even more as he's gotten older and more into music. The touring company that just passed through The Fabulous Fox Theatre (April 10-12, 2015) proved, once again, that the poly-rhythmic textures that reverberate in the venues they play overflow with a truly joyful noise that both amuses and delights.

Blanche du Bois, a woman whose life has been undermined by her romantic illusions, rejects the realities of life as her desperate defense of her weak, vulnerable soul. But when she is reduced to living on the charity of her sister, in a seedy New Orleans apartment, Blanche's confrontation with her brutish brother in law, leads to a revelation of her tragic self-delusion and, in the end, to madness. A classic American drama which ranks as one of the greatest in our theatre. Greg Procaccino, Director; Melanie Dawn Hall, Production Stage Manager

During his decade of producing shoestring theatre in a proud but dilapidated auditorium, impresario Buz Davis could only dream of the day he might return to find that hall had received a multi-million dollar renovation, and that he was once again at the fore of creating captivating theatre there. That dream comes true this spring.

My first experience with Stomp was when I was working at the Wilbur Theatre in Boston in the late 90s as a theatre manager. I recall watching from the back as small bits of plaster floated to the ground. The old building didn't know what it was in for.
