BWW Reviews: The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis's Masterful Production of SAFE HOUSE

America has a rich history, some of which, of course, we'd all prefer to forget. But, to ignore them can just lead to repeating them, and we all should know better than that by now. However, it's important that we continue to mine the events of the past in order to enlighten and provoke discussion. This is the very thing that Keith Josef Adkins' brilliant work SAFE HOUSE does with a considerable amount of power and conviction. It's a story set in Kentucky in 1843, when slavery was still very much a resident evil that ruled the land, even though there were African Americans who were freeborn. The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis is currently presenting this new play, and as they always seem to have a knack for doing, it's done in a completely compelling and infinitely memorable fashion that makes for a truly moving and enriching experience.

BWW Review: The Rep's Moody and Engaging Production of DOUBLE INDEMNITY

The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis closes their season with a bang, literally, presenting a dramatically atmospheric production of novelist James M. Cain's classic work, DOUBLE INDEMNITY (lovingly adapted by David Pichette and R. Hamilton Wright). It's a script that overflows with double entendres, and is populated by the kind of hard boiled characters you would expect from this famous piece of pulp fiction. It even manages to outdo Billy Wilder's film noir version to a degree because it doesn't have to deal with the censor's deep cuts that left the movie a lot less racy and edgy than the book. Suffice to say, this is an incredibly cool, and surprisingly amusing, presentation that is another example of the kind of must-see theatre the Rep consistently produces.

BWW Reviews: FAIRY TALE Too Twisted to Have Happily Ever After

The Off-Broadway Shelter Theatre presents FAIRY TALE, of five original short plays inspired by the stories of The Brothers Grimm, Washington Irving, and Charles Perrault. Each story is a unique take on classic fairy tales, but unfortunately, there is hardly any semblance of the originals as these stories remain strange and often quite disturbing.
