Westport Country Playhouse announces a $100,000 "Theater Worth Supporting" Challenge that asks ticket buyers, subscribers, and others in the community to raise an equivalent sum between now and November 3, coinciding with the run of the current production, "A Raisin in the Sun," the landmark drama written by Lorraine Hansberry and directed by Tony Award winner Phylicia Rashad. The Challenge donors, Maureen and Edwin Schloss of Darien, have requested that their call to action be matched specifically by new and increased gifts.

Samuel French Inc. Off-Off-Broadway Short Play Festival announces the 40 semi-finalists for its 37th annual season. Chosen from over nine hundred submissions by playwriting workshops, university theatre programs, and professional companies both in the U.S. and abroad, these 40 plays will be presented October 23rd-27th with finals on Sunday October 28th at the Beckett Theatre, Theatre Row (410 W. 42nd Street). Out of these plays, six finalists will be chosen by the Samuel French, Inc. editorial staff to receive publication and licensing contracts.

The drive will start this month, July 2012, and culminate on August 19th, 2012. I chose this date to honor my parents since it will be their 60th wedding anniversary. I have already given my mom the gift of music remembrance, and the results were remarkable.

A 25th anniversary production of the imaginative, fractured-fairy tale musical "Into the Woods" by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim will be staged at the theater where Sondheim was an apprentice in 1950, Westport Country Playhouse, in Westport, CT, May 1 through May 26. Directed by Mark Lamos, the Playhouse's artistic director, the musical will open the historic theater's 82nd season. It is co-produced with Baltimore's CENTERSTAGE.
Westport Country Playhouse will host its third annual open house, "Playhouse Community Day," on Saturday, April 14, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering a wide variety of family activities, backstage tours, displays and historic artifacts, insight on the upcoming 2012 season and ticket discounts throughout the day. Michael Klingher of Weston was elected to chair Westport Country Playhouse's board of trustees' leadership at a recent annual meeting. Klingher succeeds Sandra DeFeo of Westport, who served as chair since 2008.
