BWW Review: THE SHADOW BOX at Little Theatre Of Mechanicsburg
by Allison Rambler - May 2, 2017

The world of theatre encompasses every issue under the sun; from war to small town drama, from orphans to puppets, theatre has seen it all. Using this logic, it makes sense that many plays and musicals often deal with the challenging topic of illness and death. Musicals such as NEXT TO NORMAL and HEATHERS take very different approaches to the subject of our own mortality, and there are a myriad of plays that attempt to tackle the issue. Little Theatre of Mechanicsburg has chosen one such play, a drama entitled THE SHADOW BOX, and through this show continues to prove that they deserve a bigger spotlight than the small, tucked away world of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania can provide for them.

WNO Presents Jake Heggie and Terrence McNally's DEAD MAN WALKING and Terence Blanchard and Michael Cristofer's CHAMPION
by Christina Mancuso - Feb 7, 2017

Washington National Opera (WNO) continues its 2016-2017 season with the company premieres of two modern American masterworks of opera: Jake Heggie and Terrence McNally's Dead Man Walking, February 25-March 11, 2017 in the Opera House, and Terence Blanchard and Michael Cristofer's Champion, March 4- 18, 2017 in the Opera House. Both operas explore the theme of social justice which is often associated with John F. Kennedy and are presented as part of JFKC, the Kennedy Center's season-long celebration of President Kennedy's centennial. Using many of the same designers and scenic elements, the directors of each opera have worked collaboratively to create two distinct worlds in each new production to showcase the issues of Justice, Courage, and Freedom at the heart of these two compelling stories. An additional special event will continue the exploration of these themes: Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will headline Justice at the Opera on Thursday, March 9, 2017 in the Opera House.

Washington National Opera to Present THE DAUGHTER OF THE REGIMENT with Special Opening Night Guest Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg!
by Ashlee Latimer - Oct 21, 2016

Washington National Opera (WNO) continues its 2016–2017 season with a new production of Gaetano Donizetti's mashup of slapstick comedy and charming romance—The Daughter of the Regiment, November 12–20, 2016, in the Kennedy Center Opera House. The cast is led by superstar tenor Lawrence Brownlee as the hero Tonio and fast-rising soprano Lisette Oropesa, who starred as Susanna earlier this season in WNO's The Marriage of Figaro, as Marie. While the opera is best known for the vocal acrobatics required of its singers, the high-comedy antics of the non-singing role of The Duchess of Krakenthorp often steal the show. On opening night, November 12, 2016, the role of The Duchess will be performed by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in her official Washington National Opera stage debut. The brand-new WNO production is directed by acclaimed Broadway director and choreographer Robert Longbottom, and the WNO Orchestra is led by rising conductor Christopher Allen, both in their WNO debuts.
