ELMER GANTRY is a musical version of Sinclair Lewis' best-selling novel, directed by Signature's Artistic Director Eric Schaeffer (Broadway's Follies, Million Dollar Quartet). Schaeffer collaborated on the last production of Elmer Gantry at Marriott's Lincolnshire Theatre in Chicago with authors John Bishop (book), Mel Marvin (music) and Bob Satuloff (lyrics) in 1998; the show has not been produced since then. Signature Theatre's presentation will be the 5th production in the show's history. Running in the MAX Theatre now through November 9, Signature's production will include several brand new songs by Mel Marvin and Bob Satuloff and a reimagined script that John Bishop worked on until his death in 2006. The producers of Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical have announced today that Shuler Hensley will star as the Grinch in the 2014 production at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. The delightful family musical, which first won over Broadway audiences in 2006 and 2007, returns for a limited holiday engagement from Friday, December 5 to Sunday, December 28, 2014. Hensley will also star in the production in Chicago from Thursday, November 20 to Saturday, November 29 at the Chicago Theater.

One constant in Washington-area theater for which we should all be grateful, is that the wonderful creative minds and souls at Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA, can be counted on to bring us fresh, innovative and carefully crafted productions of shows that may be new to many of us. This season, Signature is giving us three world premier productions of new musicals (Sheryl Crow's Diner; John Kander's Kid Victory and DC-native Nick Blaemire's Soon), but also a revival of a musical version of the story of Elmer Gantry, a traveling salesman turned preacher, who brings a religious revival a possibly dangerous spark in his pursuit of love. Almost 90 years ago, Sinclair Lewis brought Elmer Gantry to the page and Signature's Artistic Director Eric Schaeffer, is bringing him to the Signature stage for 2014 audiences.

The National Music Theater Institute (NMTI) students have just returned to campus from two weeks training in New York City; scroll down for photos from the visit! NMTI is the newest credit-earning, semester-long intensive from the National Theater Institute at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center. Utilizing the O'Neill's 50-year experience in training young theater artists and history of developing new musicals (including Nine, Avenue Q, In The Heights, [title of show], and Violet), NMTI offers broad-based training in all areas of musical theater: acting, singing, directing, writing, dance, composition, and choreography. In addition to the semester's rigorous curriculum-classes 14 hours a day, 7 days a week with emphasis on collaboration and the creation of original work- two weeks of the semester are spent learning in the epicenter of American music theater.

This year, audiences can look forward to four unique and fun-filled seasonal shows at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. The holiday concert season at the Center kicks off with beloved American singer/songwriter Judy Collins in her show, Holidays and Hits (December 6) performing an array of holiday classics as well as her inspiring interpretations of folk standards. The enchanting and ever popular Celtic Woman returns with the spirited show Home for Christmas - The Symphony Tour (December 15), and, finally, the popular Fiesta Navidad with Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano (December 23) rounds out the holiday programming with an evening of traditional Mexican songs and dance.

Paulette Haupt, Artistic Director of the National Music Theater Conference at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center, will conduct a public symposium on orchestrating musical theater in today's world on Thursday, July 3 at 1:00pm. The Orchestration Symposium comes as the summer conference continues its focus on exploration and role of orchestration and arranging in the development of new work.

Eight shows will feature an array of talented international artists who will entertain and inspire families gathered for the spontaneous thrill and joy of live theater. Each performance will be preceded by an hour of free audience engagement activities themed to the show. Performances are in the Center's Samueli Theater unless otherwise noted.
