On Sunday, June 16, from 1pm to 10pm, Bang on a Can returns to downtown Manhattan for its annual Bang on a Can Marathon, FREE for the public at Pace University's Schimmel Center for the Arts (3 Spruce Street), presented by River To River Festival and Bang on a Can, and co-presented by Pace University. The Marathon is part of the opening weekend of River To River Festival, kicking off the month-long celebration of free music, dance, film, and arts events. The extensive renovation of Brookfield Place temporarily impacts the presentation of large-scale events in the Winter Garden, where the Marathon has been held for several years. This year the Marathon will embrace the intimate Pace setting to present a few dramatically quiet and tender musical offerings before returning to the Winter Garden's wide-open spaces in 2014.
Pianist Simone Dinnerstein gained international success from her recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations, which ranked No. 1 on the US Billboard Classical Chart in its first week of sales. Released in 2007 on Telarc, it was named to many "Best of" lists including those of The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and The New Yorker. The first classical musician ever featured at (Le) Poisson Rouge(158 Bleecker Street), Ms. Dinnerstein returns as part of LPR X 5: A Celebration of LPR's Fifth Anniversary to perform the Goldberg Variations live on Sunday, June 9 at 7:30pm.

As part of its 40th Anniversary year, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) unveils the 2013 edition of the annual River To River Festival, Downtown's completely free summer arts festival. This year's edition takes place June 15-July 14 and presents a diverse collection of music, dance, theater, visual art, film and unique participatory experiences by both renowned and breakout artists from New York City and beyond.
Pianist Simone Dinnerstein and the Chiara String Quartet reunite in two Brooklyn concerts - Sunday, March 10 at 4pm at Brooklyn Public Library's Dweck Center (10 Grand Army Plaza), presented by Classical Interludes; and Tuesday, March 12 at 7pm at P.S. 321 (180 7th Avenue), presented by Dinnerstein's Neighborhood Classics. Both programs include Ravel's String Quartet in F Major, which the Chiara will perform from memory, and Dvo?ak's Piano Quintet in A Major, Op. 81. On Tuesday, February 26, the debut recording of David T. Little's 'sharp, elegantly bristling' opera-theatre piece, Soldier Songs (2006), which recently completed a wildly successful NYC premiere run on the inaugural PROTOTYPE festival, is released on audio CD from Innova Recordings, produced by Lawson White. The recording receives its digital release on iTunes and Amazon today, February 5, 2013.

On Sunday, December 2 at 3pm, the talented teenagers of Face the Music will perform a concert entitled "Why Am I Hearing Rock in my Classical Music?" at P.S. 69Q (77-02 37th Ave.) in Queens. All ticket sales for these one-hour, family-friendly concerts benefit the host schools

Looking ahead to winter, David T. Little's evening-length multi-media music-theatre work, Soldier Songs (2006), receives its New York City premiere as part of BMP and HERE's inaugural PROTOTYPE: Opera/Theatre/Now festival January 11-13 + 16-18, 2013, showcasing pioneering work by a new generation of opera-theatre and music-theatre composers. Created and composed by Little, Soldier Songs is based on recorded interviews with veterans of five wars, with a libretto adapted by the composer.

Maya Beiser, described by the Boston Globe as having "virtuoso chops, rock-star charisma, and an appetite for pushing her instrument to The Edge of avant-garde adventurousness," will give the world premiere of Michael Harrison's Just Ancient Loops with new film by Bill Morrison during the 12-hour Bang on a Can Marathon after 9pm tonight, June 17, 2012 at World Financial Center Winter Garden (220 Vesey Street, NYC). A recording of Just Ancient Loops will be released on Cantaloupe Music in fall 2012. The album, entitled Time Loops, also includes Harrison's Hijaz for Maya Beiser and the Young People's Chorus of New York City with Harrison on piano, plus music by Arvo Part and J.S. Bach.
