Concert to Honor Tree of Life Synagogue Victims on PBS December 11

NYU Steinhardt's Program in Vocal Performance will present L'Enfant et Les Sortileges (The Child and the Magic Spells) from November 30 to December 2. The one-act opera features music by Maurice Ravel and libretto by Colette and will be sung in English. NYU Steinhardt's Garth Bardsley directs.

Combining the political with the poetic, William Kentridge will animate Park Avenue Armory's Wade Thompson Drill Hall with a grand, multidisciplinary work commemorating the millions of Africans who served in World War I. Co-commissioned by Park Avenue Armory, 14-18 NOW Centenary Commissions, MASS MoCA, and the Ruhrtriennale, with additional support from the Holland Festival, The Head & The Load combines music and movement, sculpture and shadow play to critically examine colonialism and how somber remnants of history continue to color our experiences today. Performed from December 4 to December 15, 2018, The Head & The Load features music by Kentridge's long-time collaborator Philip Miller and co-composer Thuthuka Sibisi and choreography by Gregory Maqoma, performed by an international ensemble cast of singers, dancers, and performers, including the Brooklyn-based orchestra collective The Knights. Kentridge weaves these elements together to conjure a "historical drawing in performance" of immensive proportion and imagination.

For his inaugural season as Principal Conductor of Orchestra of St. Luke's, Bernard Labadie has curated a three-concert residency at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage-marking the 32nd year of the OSL series at Carnegie Hall-with a focus on the music and influence of Joseph Haydn. The first concert today, October 25 at 8:00 p.m., which pairs Haydn's "Nelson Mass" with Mozart's Requiem, K. 626 (revised and completed by Robert Levin), marks OSL's first collaboration with La Chapelle de Quebec, the choir founded and directed by Maestro Labadie. Soloists joining the ensembles on stage include soprano Lauren Snouffer, mezzo-soprano Susan Graham, tenor Lothar Odinius, and bass-baritone Philippe Sly.

Songs by Wagner, Schumann, Ravel, and Falla   Carnegie Hall today announced that pianist Kevin Murphy will replace Malcolm Martineau performing in recital with mezzo-soprano El?na Garan?a in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage next Tuesday, October 23 at 8:00 p.m. Mr. Martineau has withdrawn from this performance due to a death in his family. 'One of Asia's best' (Los Angeles Times), the Taiwan Philharmonic embarks on a North American tour this fall stopping in Costa Mesa (10/30), San Diego (10/31), Seattle (11/3), and San Francisco (11/5). The orchestra, led by Maestro Shao-Chia Lü, launches the tour by returning to Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa nearly two years after their highly acclaimed United States debut at the same hall in December 2016. This time the performance features star pianist Stephen Hough performing Liszt's dazzling first piano concerto. One of today's greatest living pianists, Hough is described by The Guardian as possessing 'the most perfect piano playing conceivable.' The concert name, 'From Formosa,' gives a nod to the historic republic on the island of Taiwan while the music traces Taiwan's classical music tradition with Taiwanese composer Gordon Chin's 'Dancing Song' from Three Aboriginal Songs for Orchestra. The first performance of the tour marks the work's North American premiere.

The Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellows will commemorate the centenary of the Armistice that ended the First World War with a concert on Sunday 11 November at Verbrugghen Hall, Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

On Tuesday, October 30 at 8:00 p.m., violinist Maxim Vengerov returns to Carnegie Hall for his first recital appearance in more than a decade. Mr. Vengerov is joined by pianist Roustem Saïtkoulov for a recital of violin sonatas and showpieces. The program includes Brahms's Violin Sonata No. 3 in D Minor, Enescu's Violin Sonata No. 2 in F Minor, Ravel's Violin Sonata, Ernst's The Last Rose of Summer, and Paganini's I palpiti (after Rossini's 'Di tanti palpiti' from Tancredi; arr. Fritz Kreisler).

The San Diego Symphony's annual January Festival returns in its fourth year entitled, Hearing the Future. Throughout the festival, which runs January 9 - 27, 2019, the organization explores and celebrates the power of music and art to give voice to the evolution and revolutions in the world at large. The festival, curated by composer-conductor Matthew Aucoin (b.1990), will shine a spotlight on the music being made today - from composers and performers who are still in high school, to a 90-year-old jazz master. The festival will also explore the way music from the past - from Haydn, Beethoven and Berlioz to the creators of African-American spirituals - engaged with the most urgent issues of their time.

NSO Music Director Gianandrea Noseda leads the Orchestra on a journey exploring the link between image and sound. Three performances-Thursday, September 27,  at 7 p.m.; Friday, September 28, at 8 p.m.; and Saturday, September 29, at 8 p.m.-at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall include Sergei Rachmaninoff's The Isle of the Dead; Ottorino Respighi's Trittico Botticelliano; and Maurice Ravel's orchestration of Modest Musorgsky's Pictures from an Exhibition, originally composed for piano.

On Today, July 28, 2018 at 8:00pm, Spectrum presents contemporary Chinese-American pianist Jenny Q Chai in Sonorous Brushes, a new multi-sensory program employing Chai's unique form of synesthesia. The program explores repertoire that lives at the intersection of color and sound, exploring this meeting of the senses through important works of the colorful Impressionistic era paired with new works created using Artificial Intelligence technology. In order to fully realize this concept, Chai completed a six-month residency at Cite des Arts in Paris, where she worked simultaneously on the musical performance and the paintings associated with each score. Sonorous Brushes was designed and premiered at Wigmore Hall in London on June 26, 2018.

On Friday, September 7, 2018, the award-winning Tesla Quartet(Ross Snyder & Michelle Lie, violins; Edwin Kaplan, viola; Serafim Smigelskiy, cello) releases its debut album, Haydn, Ravel, and Stravinsky, on Orchid Classics. The record features performances of Ravel's String Quartet in F major; Haydn's String Quartet in C major, Op.54 No.2; Stravinsky's Concertino for String Quartet; and three works by Ravel newly arranged for string quartet by Tesla violinist Ross Snyder: Menuet sur le nom d'Haydn, Menuet antique, and Menuet in C sharp minor.
