PS Classics, the label dedicated to the heritage of Broadway and American popular song, released the two-disc set Broadway cast album of the Kennedy Center's acclaimed revival of FOLLIES on Tuesday, November 29, 2011. Since then, the Metropolitan Museum of Art requested permission from PS Classics to include "Broadway Baby" in an upcoming compilation disc. Recently, conductor Keith Lockhart was joined by Bernadette Peters to present the schedule for the Boston Pops' Spring 2012 season. Peters was the guest during the Opening Night concert at Boston's beautiful Symphony Hall. As stellar as she is, Peters is only one of the sensational artists who have been scheduled to appear with the Boston Pops which is celebrating its 127th season. On June 5th, 6th and 7th, Broadway's Marin Mazzie and Jason Danieley will perform "A Tribute to Cole Porter". American Idol's Melinda Doolittle will join Gospel singer Crystal Aitkin and Charles Floyd for the 20th Gospel Night Celebration on June 9th. Although many people know Steve Martin as a comic actor and playwright, he is also a very serious musician who will be bringing his bluegrass band, The Steep Canyon Rangers, to play with the Pops on May 29th and 30th. Anne Hampton Callaway, who is one of the premier interpreters of the American Songbook will bring her unique stylings to what is being billed as "The Barbra Streisand Songbook" on May 15th and 16th. Singer Maureen McGovern will join the Pops to sing selections from her Broadway show LITTLE WOMEN as a tribute to the novel's author Louisa May Alcott.
Maureen McGovern returns to The RRazz Room to perform her new show, 'dangling conversations...' Souther, Don Henley, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springstein, Jimmy Webb, Pete Seeger, Laura Nyro, among others, including classic songs such as 'Help Me,' 'Time and Love,' 'Turn, Turn, Turn,' 'An American Tune,' 'Up Up and Away', 'Faithless Love' and many more. She will be joined my Music Director Jeff Harris on piano. View photos from the show below!
On Sunday April 22 composer Michele Brourman (left), joined by gifted singer Pat Whiteman (right), presented a quite extraordinary evening of mostly original musical material at Sterling's Upstairs at the Federal. Brourman is best known for cabaret standards such as 'My Favorite Year', with lyrics by Karen Gottlieb, and for penning the complete musical score for A Dangerous Beauty, with lyrics by Amanda McBroom, which received a premiere at the Pasadena Playhouse in 2011. She is an unquestionably amazing talent, whose music is deeply soulful, poetic; some on the romantic side; some in a purely satirical mood. You will cry or laugh depending on the tune at hand, but never halfheartedly.
Michael Riedel reports in today's New York Post that Lincoln Center Theater 'wants the Beaumont for its next big production - a revival of THE KING AND I starring Kelli O'Hara.' O'Hara is currently starring opposite Matthew Broderick in NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT.
