DUTF Returns To The HERE Arts Center 5/6- 5/16

The Downtown Urban Theater Festival (DUTF) makes a much-anticipated return to the HERE Arts Center, May 6 thru 16, celebrating its 7th Season with twelve new works by playwrights from across the U.S. Over two weeks, this multicultural, cross section of artists based in Chicago, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and San Francisco will present original works of urban life on topics such as the imperfections of our leaders, stereotypes, hate crime, living on the 'down low' and self-immolation.

WNO Begins Community Culture Project 5/2, Documents & Preserves Original Art

On May 2, the Ward 7 Arts Collaborative (W7AC), the Humanities Council of Washington, D.C. and Washington National Opera (WNO) will kick off a summer-long initiative, the Community Culture Project, to document and preserve the area's unique history through the creation of original art.

Lark Presents THE MOUNTAINTOP Workshop Production 4/29-5/2

This month, the Lark Play Development Center will present a BareBones® production of THE MOUNTAINTOP by Katori Hall (Hoodoo Love). This workshop production comes as the next stage of development for the play, which was part of the Lark's 2007-08 Playwrights' Workshop program led by Lark Playwright Advisor Arthur Kopit.

RED INK To Be Performed At Mixed Blood Theatre 4/23 - 5/10

Written by seven indigenous playwrights, from nine North American First Nations, Mixed Blood Theatre?s world-premiere production Red Ink explores the issues of contemporary Native life. Red Ink runs April 23 through May 10 at Mixed Blood Theatre in Minneapolis. Purchase tickets at 612.338.6131 or visit www.mixedblood.com. PURE CONFIDENCE Reopens Off-Broadway At 59E59 Theaters 5/27

The Mixed Blood Theatre Company's January 2009 production of Carlyle Brown's Pure Confidence, directed by Tony-nominee Marion McClinton, will reopen Off-Broadway at the 59E59 Theaters in Manhattan on May 27. The all-Minnesota cast and creative team is continuing with the show, featuring Gavin Lawrence in his seventh production as Simon Cato.

EYES ON CHICAGO Competition Of 'Cell Short takes' Accepting Submissions

In conjunction with her Goodman Theatre world-premiere production of Magnolia, playwright Regina Taylor announces Eyes on Chicago, a competition of 'cell short takes'-films that are 5-10 minutes in length and filmed entirely on cell phone cameras-for Chicago students aged 15-30. Cell short takes should address one of three questions: 'How are you, as a Chicagoan, affected by the numerous changes, good and bad, America is currently facing?

Key West Symphony 'Songs For A New World'

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Betsy Ross and Mrs. Santa Claus are among the characters who confront critical turning points in their lives amid the musical splendor of Jason Robert Brown's Songs for A New World which will be presented by the Key West Symphony Orchestra on Wednesday, April 15 at 8 p.m. in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

Mavis Staples Comes To Massey Hall W/ James Hunter 3/21

Recently named in the '100 Greatest Singers of All Time' list by Rolling Stone magazine, soul and gospel legend Mavis Staples possesses one of the most recognizable and treasured voices in contemporary music. From her early days sharing lead vocals with her groundbreaking family group, The Staple Singers, to her powerful solo recordings, Mavis Staples is an inspirational force in modern popular culture and music. Her last appearance at Massey Hall was with the Blind Boys of Alabama in December of 2004. This concert marks the debut of James Hunter.

Goodman Unites 6 Theaters For Celebration Of Women Artists

Goodman Theatre unites six diverse Chicago theater companies who are presenting work created, produced and/or performed by women for a special spring series, 'Taking the Stage: A Celebration of Women Making Theater,' April 4 - 19, 2009. Over the course of two weeks, each of the participating companies-Babes with Blades, Berwyn's 16th Street Theater, Goodman Theatre, Rivendell Theatre Ensemble, Serendipity Theatre Collective and Teatro Luna-presents productions, panel discussions and workshops that highlight the voices and visions of female theater artists, as well as the opportunities and obstacles they face today.
