Regional Theatre Of The Week: South Coast Repertory Theatre in Orange County, CA

South Coast Repertory was founded 49 years ago in Orange County with the belief that theatre is an art form with a unique power to illuminate the human experience, and the commitment to advance the art of theatre in the service of their community, and the aim to extend that service through educational, intercultural, and outreach programs that harmonize with their artistic mission. Over the past five decades they have become one of the most celebrated and honored regional theatre companies in America. Their string of awards include 83 Distinguished Achievement Awards from The Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle (including a Special Award for Continued Excellence on their 30th Anniversary in 1994), 470 Drama-Logue Awards, 19 Backstage West Garland Awards, 29 OC Weekly Awards, a 1995 Theatre LA Lifetime Achievement Award for Founders David Emmes and Martin Benson, and The 1998 Tony Award for Distinguished Achievement by a Regional Theatre.

Berkeley Rep's CHINGLISH Heads to Hong Kong, March 1-6, 2013

Today, even as American Idiot prepares to sail for Europe, Berkeley Repertory Theatre announced that its upcoming production of Chinglish is headed for Hong Kong. It plays from March 1 through March 6 in the 1,200-seat Lyric Theatre at the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts.

South Coast Rep's JANE OF THE JUNGLE Premieres Tonight, May 25

Growing up is hard to do-especially if you wake up one day with spots and a tail. In the season's final production of South Coast Repertory's Theatre for Young Audiences series, Jane of the Jungle, a world premiere musical from playwright Karen Zacarias and composer Deborah Wicks La Puma, tells the story of an average girl who is about to undergo some big changes. The show will run on the Julianne Argyros Stage from tonight May 25 - June 10.

EURYDICE, CHINGLISH, et al. Set for South Coast Rep's 2012-13 Season

South Coast Repertory's 49th season will offer audiences an exciting blend of current hits and world premieres. The season begins with Alan Ayckbourn's hilarious farce, Absurd Person Singular, and will include new plays by some of the hottest writers on the theatre scene, including the world premiere of Noah Haidle's Smokefall and a second world premiere to be announced; Sarah Ruhl's comic tale of loss, Eurydice; the Southland debuts of Bill Cain's touching How to Write a New Book for the Bible, Amanda Dehnert's trailblazing musical take on Shakespeare, The Verona Project, and David Henry Hwang's hit comedy Chinglish; and the West Coast premieres of Samuel D. Hunter's poignantly funny The Whale and Stephen Adly Guirgis' Broadway hit The Motherf**ker with the Hat.

Ron OJ Parson, who has previously directed Jitney at St. Louis Black Rep, directs the show, which runs on the Segerstrom Stage from tonight, May 11 - June 10.

The Groundling, a new comedy about a man struggling to save his marriage, will have a staged reading March 19 at 7:30 p.m. as part of South Coast Repertory's NewSCRipts series. It is the 117th play to receive a staged reading in SCR's venerable play reading program.

SCR's Season to Include PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, HOW THE WORLD BEGAN, & More

South Coast Repertory's 48th season will offer audiences an exciting blend of new plays and modern-day classics. The season begins with an adaptation of Jane Austen's beloved Pride and Prejudice and will include works from some of theatre's master craftsmen: Horton Foote's touching The Trip to Bountiful, August Wilson's powerful Jitney, Donald Margulies' stimulating Sight Unseen and Suzan-Lori Park's gripping Topdog/Underdog.

Christmas will once again gladden the heart of curmudgeonly Ebenezer Scrooge when South Coast Repertory presents its 32nd annual production of A Christmas Carol Nov. 26 through Dec. 24.
