In May 1977 three artists--Robin Hirsch, a writer and director; Charles McKenna, an actor; and Raphaela Pivetta, a visual artist--stumbled across a tiny storefront on Cornelia Street in the heart of Greenwich Village and thought it the perfect place to open a café.
The National Jazz Museum's June line-up includes discussions with musical artists Paquito D'Rivera and Craig Harris for Harlem Speaks; a talk with a living literary legend, Peter Straub, at Jazz for Curious Readers; and our adult education series, Jazz for Curious Listeners, features instrumentalists Jeremy Pelt, Nicholas Payton and Orrin Evans taking the reins of discourse on jazz in the 21st century. Tony Malaby Cello Quartet features Tony Malaby, tenor saxophone; Daniel Levin, cello; Eivind Opsvik, bass; Nasheet Waits, drums; Michaëll Attias, alto saxophone; Tony Malaby, tenor & soprano saxophone; Mark Helias, bass; Nasheet Waits, drums and will performan at 9 PM. In May 1977 three artists--Robin Hirsch, a writer and director; Charles McKenna, an actor; and Raphaela Pivetta, a visual artist--stumbled across a tiny storefront on Cornelia Street in the heart of Greenwich Village and thought it the perfect place to open a café.
Born in Illinois from Taiwanese and East Timorese parents, Jen Shyu is a vocalist, composer, improviser, multi-instrumentalist (piano, moon lute, er hu, and violin), and dancer. She is currently a core member of saxophonist Steve Coleman's Five Elements. As a soloist and bandleader now based in New York City, Shyu has focused on expanding the possibilities of voice and dance in the improvisational, experimental jazz, and creative music worlds. She also continues a dying Taiwanese folk tradition on the 2-stringed Taiwanese moon guitar, recently named the first 'Ambassador of Hengchun Folk Music' by Hengchun's mayor.
