Hauser and Wirth to Display New Works by Djordje Ozbolt, 1/14

New York... Beginning 14 January 2015, Hauser & Wirth will present 'More paintings about poets and food', the gallery's first New York exhibition devoted to internationally admired Belgrade-born, London-based artist Djordje Ozbolt. Based in London since the mid-1990s, Ozbolt is a voracious traveller and exoticist whose work wistfully ransacks cultures, traditions, curiosities, and epochs. Collapsing the narratives of his paintings and sculptures into solitary images, Ozbolt creates mysterious and often macabre imagery that persistently conflates traditional European genres – of portraiture, still life, landscape, and history painting – with motifs sourced from Christianity, African and Asian art, and cultural stereotypes, all overlaid with the artist's signature sharp wit.

BWW Reviews: The Mikhailovsky Ballet's THE FLAMES OF PARIS

Remember high school history. Some of us loved it; others hated it. Best of all, there were the teachers. They tried to educate us about British royalty, Swedish neutrality, or crumbling Hapsburg empires. How I wish they had known The Flames of Paris back then. Just think, in less than two hours we'd have known all about the French Revolution. While there were plenty of Civil War movies-just in case we needed some brain reinforcement for our exams-the French Revolution was a very deep ocean away. I know we had all seen Norma Shearer in Marie Antoinette or some version of A Tale of Two Cities. But that's as far as most of us got to a real understanding of French history. Besides, they spoke a strange language, and in those days you didn't want to be caught being bi-lingual.

BWW Reviews: SCROOGE IN ROUGE Generates Lots of Laughs at Rancho Mirage's Desert Rose Playhouse

The Desert Rose Playhouse, in Rancho Mirage California, is presenting a hilariously funny sendup of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, SCROOGE IN ROUGE. The plot's premise is that a small music hall on London's outskirts plans to present A CHRISTMAS CAROL. When all but three actors in the twenty-member cast develop food poisoning, the three decide to go forward with each of them taking on multiple roles. The puns and other corny jokes fly in this brilliant production. If you see only one version of A CHRISTMAS CAROL this year, it should be this one.

BWW Reviews: Mikhailovksy Ballet's THE FLAMES OF PARIS

Mikhailovsky Ballet paid homage to universal struggles for justice in their opening performance of The Flames of Paris at the Koch Theater, Friday, November 15th. Originally created to mark the 15th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution, The Flames of Paris as a narrative succeeded because it appealed to the people (any people group experiencing the desperate, unifying force of oppression) while paralleling the arch of a traditional story ballet.
