BWW REVIEW: Dames Add Heat to Lyric's CITY OF ANGELS

CITY OF ANGELS, Larry Gelbart, Cy Coleman, and David Zippel's musical romp through the seedy underworld of Hollywood via film noir, would be nothing without its dazzling dames. The same holds true for the production soon ending its run at Boston's Lyric Stage. Without the humor and heat brought by the wonderful Leigh Barrett and Jennifer Ellis, director Spiro Veloudos' CITY OF ANGELS would be all steak and no sizzle.

Fugard Theatre's A HUMAN BEING DIED THAT NIGHT to Play BAM This Summer

In this taut 2013 theatrical adaptation of Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela's award winning-book, the apartheid regime's most notorious assassin and head of its death squad, Eugene de Kock (played by Matthew Marsh), sits opposite psychologist Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela (played Noma Dumezweni) in Pretoria Central Prison in 1997. Gobodo-Madikizela is a member of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission determined to understand his actions. She questions de Kock, who is sentenced to two life terms plus 212 years for crimes against humanity, murder, conspiracy to murder, attempted murder, assault, kidnapping, illegal possession of firearms, and fraud.

Stage Left Studio Kicks Off 7th Annual Left Out Festival Today

What do you get when you mix 14 playwrights, 50 performers doing 30 plays in 18 days? This year's 7th Annual Left Out Festival, a tasty, spiked punch full of plays about Cowboy Bars, OraQuick, Homophobia, Tap-Dancing Lesbians, Cartoons, Plastic Bags, Bullying, Showbiz, Racism, Murder, Lesbian Camp Counselors and (gasp!) Narcissism all stirred with a Big Gay Swizzle Stick. The fun begins on April 14th and continues through May 5th at Stage Left Studio, 214 West 30th St. 6th floor. As always, The Left Out Festival proceeds will benefit Bailey House.

Houston Grand Opera Announces Full Casting for EL PASADO NUNCA SE TERMINA, 5/13

Houston, April 1, 2015—Houston Grand Opera (HGO) announced today the cast members set to appear in the much-anticipated mariachi production El Pasado Nunca Se Termina/The Past Is Never Finished, featuring internationally renowned ensemble Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán. El Pasado is the second mariachi opera from the creative team of José “Pepe” Martínez and Leonard Foglia, who collaborated to create the international hit Cruzar la Cara de la Luna/To Cross the Face of the Moon, with Mariachi Vargas, which HGO premiered in 2010 and reprised in 2013. HGO will close its 60th anniversary season with three performances of El Pasado on May 13, 16, and 17, 2015, in the Wortham Theater Center. The opera will be sung in Spanish and English with projected translations. The Chicago Tribune calls El Pasado “an audience-grabber with heart…with all the sweetness and tang of a freshly-made margarita.”

Moscow Ballet's GREAT RUSSIAN NUTCRACKER to Return to Detroit's Fox Theatre, 12/20

Once again, metro Detroit families can celebrate the beauty of the holidays with the Moscow Ballet's acclaimed Great Russian Nutcracker at the Fox Theatre on Sunday, December 20; locally presented by Fifth Third Bank. Following the success of last year's back-to-back performances, the family favorite will return for two shows at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Asia Society Texas Center Explores Chinese/Mexican Immigration in New Exhibition, Opening Today

Asia Society Texas Center is excited to announce its upcoming exhibition, The Other Side: Chinese and Mexican Immigration to America. Featuring six contemporary artists, the exhibition explores recurring issues of immigration, border relations, and labor practices that have persisted throughout U.S. history and remain timely today. The exhibition will be displayed in Asia Society Texas Center's Louisa Stude Sarofim Gallery from today, March 28, 2015 through July 19, 2015.

At a standing-room-only affair at Sanders Theatre, Longy School of Music of Bard College presented their second annual Sistema Side by Side Celebration on Friday, March 20, under the baton of the orchestra's newly appointed Music Director Jorge Soto. The evening was part of an ongoing series of events at Longy that pairs students (aged 8-14) from El Sistema-inspired music programs throughout Massachusetts with members of the Longy Conservatory Orchestra in rehearsals and performances featuring nationally renowned conductors and guest artists.
