The American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) has named Bill Cain's 'Nine Circles,' a harrowing play about war and redemption, the winner of the $25,000 Harold and Mimi Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award for 2011. The award recognizes playwrights for the best scripts that premiere professionally outside New York City during the previous calendar year.
It was announced today that Lynne Meadow, Artistic Director of Manhattan Theatre Club, will be honored with the Lucille Lortel Award for Lifetime Achievement. The award recognizes Meadow's extraordinary accomplishments and dedication to producing and directing new work Off-Broadway for over three decades. The Lucille Lortel Award ceremony will be held Sunday, May 1 at the Jack. H Skirball Center for the Performing Arts (566 Laguardia Place).
Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater will produce the first in-the-round staging of Ruined, the 2009 Pulitzer Prize winner for drama by Arena Stage Project Resident Lynn Nottage and directed by Resident Playwright Charles Randolph-Wright (Director of Arena Stage's Duke Ellington's Sophisticated Ladies). Ruined is the stirring tale of Mama Nadi, a mother figure loosely based on Bertolt Brecht's Mother Courage and Her Children, who provides refuge for women affected by civil war ravaging the Democratic Republic of Congo. The production features an expanded company with cast members playing live music and additional ensemble roles featuring University of Maryland students. Ruined runs April 22-June 5, 2011 in the Fichandler Stage.

The Asolo Rep production of Las Meninas runs from March 18-May 15, 2011 in Asolo Rep's Mertz Theatre; then will travel to Miami to perform as part of the South Miami Dade Cultural Arts Center (SMDCAC) soft opening. The SMDCAC performance is hoped to foster a further artistic exchange between the two cities and the two organizations, and lead to more projects. Unicorn Theatre and UMKC Theatre partner again, this time to produce Lynn Nottage's Pulitzer Prize Winning play, RUINED. This partnership, now in the third season, has great impact for both organizations. Graduate students pursuing their MFA in performance or design work right along professional actors, designer and directors to hone their crafts in a practical format. The Unicorn gains access to talented, young artists before they even start out their careers. Many students who have worked here as students, have since been hired back as professionals when they graduate.
