Lakewood Theatre Company continues its 60th season with the Tony Award-winning musicalGrand Hotel. Inspired by Vicki Baum's period novel of the same name, this multiple Tony Award-winning musical features music and lyrics by Robert Wright and George Forrest, with additional lyrics and music by Maury Yeston, and a book by Luther Davis.
In a historic ceremony on Monday, December 17th, the blockbuster musical WICKED's iconic Elphaba costume, hat and broom were inducted into the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. Tony Award-winning costume designer Susan Hilferty was on hand to sign the deed of gift as well as Broadway cast members Donna Vivino and Tiffany Haas who sang a selection of song from WICKED to commemorate this significant event. The costume elements will join objects from the musicals King and I, Rent and The Lion King in the museum's permanent entertainment collections.
Set in 1928 in pre-Nazi Germany and inspired by a novel and the Oscar-winning film, Grand Hotel - The Musical, rings in the New Year at TheatreZone, serving as a metaphor for a society that is frayed at the edges and soon to unravel.
Today in 1989, Grand Hotel opened at the Martin Beck Theatre (now the Al Hirschfeld Theatre) where it ran for 1017 performances. Grand Hotel is a musical with a book by Luther Davis and music and lyrics by Robert Wright and George Forrest, with additional lyrics and music by Maury Yeston. Based on the 1929 Vicki Baum novel and play, Menschen im Hotel (People in a Hotel), and the subsequent 1932 MGM feature film, the musical focuses on events taking place over the course of a weekend in an elegant hotel in 1928 Berlin and the intersecting stories of the eccentric guests of the hotel, including a fading prima ballerina; a fatally ill Jewish bookkeeper, who wants to spend his final days living in luxury; a young, handsome, but destitute Baron; a cynical doctor; and a typist dreaming of Hollywood success.

With Book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, music and lyrics by the legendary Stephen Sondheim, Forum takes comedy back to its roots, combining situations from time-tested, 2000 year old comedies of Roman playwright Plautus with the infectious energy of classic vaudeville. The result is a non-stop laugh-fest in which a crafty slave (Pseudolus) struggles to win the hand of a beautiful but slow-witted courtesan (Philia) for his young master (Hero), in exchange for freedom.

Lakewood Theatre Company will celebrate its 60th anniversary season with six productions on its Mainstage and three productions on its Side Door stage beginning July 13, 2012. Season tickets for the 2012-2013 season are on sale now and prices for the six-show season range from $170.00 - $160.00. According to the Associated press, Richland School District, outside of Pittsburgh, has decided to cancel a production of KISMET (a musical about a Muslim poet) because the community 'complained about the timing so soon after the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.' Instead, the school will stage OKLAHOMA!

Costume elements from the show's protagonist Simba and the tribal shaman Rafiki will join objects from the musicals 'Cats,' 'Rent' and the 'King and I' in the museum's permanent entertainment collections.

The original book by Charles Lederer and Luther Davis has been reworked by Kit Hesketh-Harvey and Griffin's colourful, energetic and beautifully paced production, magnificently complemented by the set design by Ultz and Wolfgang Gobbel's lighting design, breathes new life into a classic.
English National Opera announces that Michael Ball will perform the role of Hajj/Poet in the new production of Robert Wright & George Forrest's KISMET. Based on themes of Alexander Borodin and the play by Edward Knoblock, the book is by Charles Lederer & Luther Davies. This is the first new West End production for almost 30 years.
