DAVE BRUBECK Show Cancelled at Sheldon Concert Hall on 10/17

Combining complex rhythms, tones and key signatures with a West Coast Cool sound, Dave Brubeck has long been proof that creative and popular jazz can be synonymous. A favorite with critics and fans alike, Brubeck has been redefining jazz music for over 50 years, since his days with General Patton's Army Band during WWII. He is credited as a force in rebirth of jazz in the 1950s and '60s, taking the popular Dave Brubeck Quartet on tour with greats such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz, and composing standards such as 'Take Five,' now featured in the Grammy Hall of Fame, and 'Blue Rondo A La Turk.'

Bass Concert Hall Season Opens with UT Wind Ensemble, 9/16

Texas Performing Arts presents The University of Texas at Austin Wind Ensemble's first program of the performance season, with special guests Joseph Alessi, trombone, and the Jim Cullum Jazz Band, Sunday, September 16 at Bass Concert Hall. Lionardo Piano Follies Returns to the Suncoast Showroom 10/23-24

Louis Armstrong House Museum Presents Free Summer Jazz Concerts, 8/28

Outstanding young bands will play traditional jazz in Hot Jazz/Cool Garden, a free concert series at the Louis Armstrong House Museum. The popular concerts will be held in the beautiful and shady Japanese-style garden built by jazz legend Louis Armstrong and his wife Lucille. All concerts are from 1:00 to 2:30 pm.

Broadway and Pop Composer George David Weiss Dies at 89

The New York Times reports that songwriter George David Weiss died in his home in Oldwick, New Jersey this past Monday. Weiss was 89 years old and, according to his wife Claire, died of natural causes.
