Scott Johnson Premieres MIND OUT OF MATTER with Alarm Will Sound Tonight

The much-anticipated world premiere of Scott Johnson's 'Mind Out of Matter'--the composer's largest work to-date--will be performed by Alarm Will Sound at the Alexander Kasser Theater in Montclair, NJ, tonight and tomorrow, October 4 and 5. Alan Pierson is conducting. The work is a Peak Performances commission.

ANGELS IN AMERICA to Return to NYC This Fall with Ivo van Hove's Revival at BAM

Angels in America by Tony Kushner will be revived by Toneelgroep Amsterdam an directed by Ivo van Hove at BAM's Howard Gilman Opera House (30 Lafayette Ave) on October 23 & 24 at 7 p.m. and October 25 at 6 p.m. The production will feature set and light design by Jan Versweyveld, costume design by Wojciech Dziedzic, video design by Tal Yarden and music by Wim Selles. In Dutch with English titles.

Miller Theatre at Columbia University School of the Arts opens the 2014-15 Composer Portraits series with CHOU WEN-CHUNG featuring Brentano Quartet, Talujon, New York New Music Ensemble, and James Baker, conductor tonight, October 2, 2014, 8:00 p.m. at the Miller Theatre at Columbia University (2960 Broadway at 116th Street). Tickets are $20-$30 • Students with valid ID: $7-$18.

Gerald W. Lynch Theater to Present Two Fall 2014 Residencies for CUNY Dance Initiative

Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College presents two residencies as part of the CUNY Dance Initiative. The first residency with Ephrat Asherie Dance runs from September 18 - October 2, 2014. The second residency with Chloe Arnold's Syncopated Ladies will run from October 27 - November 7, 2014. Each residency will offer a Master Class to John Jay College students and a free performance open to the public.

Photo Flash: Julian Wachner Makes San Francisco Opera Debut in PARTENOPE, 10/15

San Francisco Opera today announced that Grammy-nominated American conductor Julian Wachner will make his San Francisco Opera debut conducting George Frideric Handel's Partenope, presented October 15–November 2, 2014 at the War Memorial Opera House. Mr. Wachner replaces British conductor Christian Curnyn, who has withdrawn from the production for personal reasons. Check out a look at the cast below!

World Premiere of Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca's ANTIGONA Set for UW World Series, 10/23-25

In October, the UW World Series will present the world premiere of Antigona, a new work by Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca. Hailed by critics everywhere for its transcendent and deeply emotional performances, Noche Flamenca is one of the most authentic flamenco companies in the world today, and Soledad Barrio is its star. Now, in a unique creative partnership, this remarkable company joins with acclaimed American theater director Lee Breuer to create a new work, Antigona, based on Sophocles' ancient Greek heroine. Combining live music, song, and dance, Noche Flamenca's Antigona will bring the fiery, expressive nature of flamenco to one of the world's great tragedies in an evening-length work that promises to be both gripping and intensely moving. The work is conceived and directed by Martin Santangelo with choreography by Soledad Barrio, consulting direction by Lee Breuer, and visual and mask design by Mary Frank.

Roulette to Present INTERPRETATIONS, Featuring John King's FREE PALESTINE and More, 10/23

Roulette presents Interpretations featuring selections from John King's Free Palestine, with A Secret Quartet (Cornelius Dufallo, Jennifer Choi, violins; Lev Zhurbin, viola; Yves Dharamraj, cello). Using materials derived from the Arabic systems of pitch and rhythm, maqam'at and iqa'at, each particular composition uses indeterminacy and improvisation to organize sound and time, thereby providing energetic and visceral motifs encompassing the full range of expression possible from a string quartet.

American Opera Projects and Lively Works Add Performance to 9/10 Conrad Cummings Concert

Due to popular demand, American Opera Projects and LivelyWorks have added a second performance of Two Premieres and a Reunion, a special evening of music by composer Conrad Cummings Wednesday September 10th, 2014. The second performance will take place at 9:00 p.m., immediately after the initial 7:30 p.m. performance. Both performances will be held at The National Opera Center, 330 Seventh Avenue, Manhattan.

Laura Kaminsky Named AOP Composer in Residence

American Opera Projects Inc. (AOP) announces the appointment of Laura Kaminsky as its composer-in-residence commencing September 1, 2014, three days before her opera 'As One' premieres at BAM in an AOP production (performances September 4, 6, and 7). In this role, Kaminsky will bring broad expertise to AOP enabling the Brooklyn-based company to expand its mission of identifying, developing, and presenting new and innovative works of music theater by emerging and established artists and to engage audiences in an immersive, transformative theatrical experience.
