The Town Hall's critically acclaimed Broadway by the Year's®11th Season continues with The Broadway Musicals of 1932 a year that brought us famous shows by musical theater icons such as Kern and Hammerstein (Music in the Air), Irving Berlin, (Face the Music), Cole Porter (Gay Divorce) and Dietz and Schwarz (Flying Colors), among others. Produced by The Town Hall, The Broadway Musicals of 1932 is created, written and hosted by Scott Siegel. Siegel takes the audience on a musical travelogue, exploring the history of the Great White Way and providing social anecdotes while showcasing the beloved hits and lesser-known gems from the golden age of Broadway. The show is directed by Scott Coulter and choreographed by Jeffry Denman, who bothperform in the show as well. Ross Patterson is the musical director. Building upon the success of last year's sold-out run at the Southern Theater, James Sewell Ballet returns with a very special set of world premieres from emerging choreographic voices. Featured dancemakers include Afro-modern hip-hop artist Kenna Cottman, eclectic James Sewell Ballet company member Chris Hannon, SAGE award winner Judith Howard and movement maverick Patrick Corbin, long time leading dancer with Paul Taylor and now artistic director of CorbinDances which is celebrating its 5th anniversary. The performance will also feature a new solo work by James Sewell.
The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association's 2010/11 Toyota Symphonies for Youth (TSFY) concert series at Walt Disney Concert Hall continues on Saturday, February 19, at 11 a.m., with an original concert production designed to educate young audiences about the differences and similarities of jazz for the orchestra and for a quintet. Young audiences will learn about listening and teamwork, how to 'speak jazz,' and be introduced to improvisation and scatting through participation and musical demonstrations featuring excerpts from Dvork's Symphony No. 9, Mingus' Better Git It In Your Soul, Bernstein's Times Square 1944, Ellington's It Don't Mean A Thing and two special arrangements of Itsy Bitsy Spider and Arachnology, arranged especially for this production.
