The San Diego Symphony's annual January Festival returns in its fourth year entitled, Hearing the Future. Throughout the festival, which runs January 9 - 27, 2019, the organization explores and celebrates the power of music and art to give voice to the evolution and revolutions in the world at large. The festival, curated by composer-conductor Matthew Aucoin (b.1990), will shine a spotlight on the music being made today - from composers and performers who are still in high school, to a 90-year-old jazz master. The festival will also explore the way music from the past - from Haydn, Beethoven and Berlioz to the creators of African-American spirituals - engaged with the most urgent issues of their time.

World premiere musical theater piece adapted by Davone Tines and Michael Schachter from 1931 Langston Hughes poem, 'The Black Clown.' Dramatic monologue with orchestral accompaniment is part elegy, part declaration of independence, and part celebration which resonates in 2018 America. The Classical Theatre of Harlem (CTH) is proud to announce the appointment of Carl Cofield as Associate Artistic Director. Cofield comes to the organization with a long history of directing for CTH and regional theaters across America. He is also a theater instructor and is currently on faculty at The New School and New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. CTH welcomes Cofield to further expand the mission and vision of the company.
The Williams Project latest collaboration with Equinox Studios is the very ambitious production of Blood Wedding. The story by Frederico Garcia Lorca is a twist on doomed lovers who are prevented from marrying by their families. The English version is a translation by Langston Hughes and retains both the fiery passion of the original Spanish and the poetic language of forbidden love. Equinox Studios invites the audience in to witness the story as part of the crowd.

Using a diverse cast of singers, actors, poets, and performers, 'I, Too, Sing America' honors and weaves the perspectives and experiences of American artists of color with poetry, song, music and movement, featuring original compositions by Othello Jefferson. The performances of "I, Too, Sing America" are on Friday, July 27 at 8PM and Saturday, July 28 at 2PM and 8PM in the celebrated Buriel Clay Theater. With a company of thirty-one dancers and singers, "I, Too, Sing America" highlights poetic works by artists including Langston Hughes, Jean Toomer, Beyonce, Frances Chung, Gwendolyn Brooks, Alice Walker and more. The performances are under the musical direction Othello Jefferson with choreographic direction by Christine Chung; produced and directed by Jamie Yuen-Shore.

The Ford Theatres, in association with the Arab Film and Media Institute, presents An Evening of Hip-Hop and Arabic Poetry with Omar Offendum on August 16. From the jasmine tree-lined courtyards of Nizar Qabbani's Damascene homes to the flooded riverbanks of Langston Hughes' Harlem Renaissance poems, Kennedy Center Citizen Artist (2018-2019) Omar Offendum, accompanied by oud (Middle Eastern lute) virtuoso Ronnie Malley, percussionists, and a DJ, will deliver a one-of-a-kind performance that bridges the ancient oral and musical traditions of the Middle East and North Africa with contemporary hip-hop and spoken word. For this intimate event, audiences will be seated on the Ford stage with the artists.
