Robert Sims to Perform at Lincoln Center Bruno Walter Auditorium, 10/4

In an extraordinary life that grappled with racial tensions, interracial liaisons, personal scandals and politics, lyric tenor Roland Hayes (1887 – 1977), was the first African American man to reach international fame as a concert performer and one of the few artists who could sell out Carnegie Hall and other major venues.  Once called the “Black Caruso,” Hayes was also hailed as one of the greatest performers of the 20th century.  On October 4, critically acclaimed baritone Robert Sims will honor Hayes with a concert featuring African American spirituals, arranged by Hayes and narrated by George Shirley, in conjunction with his latest recording Robert Sims Sings the Spirituals of Roland Hayes.

'SONGS OF THE HARLEM RIVER' Set for Dream Up Festival

'Songs of the Harlem River: Forgotten one acts from the Harlem Renaissance' is a collection of one-acts written between 1920-1930 including works by Marita Bonner, Rafe M. Coleman, Georgia Douglas Johnson, Willis Richardson and Eulalie Spence as well as the poems of Sterling A. Brown, Langston Hughes and others. The evening is directed and choreographed by Shela Xoregos and will have its world premiere August 30 to September 6 in Theater for the New City's 2015 Dream Up Festival.

SHOUT! to Premiere at Theater for the New City's Dream Up Festival, 9/12-20

'SHOUT! The Drama of an Invisible Black Man of a Certain Age in the Last Days of Political Correctness' is a play for one man written by noted African-American playwright Henry Miller and performed by noted opera singer Arthur Woodley. Its world premiere will be presented September 12 to 20 by Theater for the New City's Dream Up Festival.

Classical Theatre of Harlem's THE TEMPEST Begins Tonight

The 15th anniversary season of The Classical Theatre of Harlem (CTH) (Ty Jones, Producing Artistic Director; David Roberts, Managing Director) continues with CTH's free, summer, uptown production of William Shakespeare's The Tempest, presented in partnership with City Parks Foundation's SummerStage festival. The Carl Cofield-directed production, which stars New York theater and Broadway veteran Ron Cephas Jones, will transform the Richard Rodgers Amphitheater in Marcus Garvey Park into an enchanted Caribbean island where the magic takes flight, with an elaborate aerial design elements planned. The third annual CTH Under the Stars presentation holds previews tonight, July 3, and Saturday, July 4. Performances, which are free and open to the public, run from July 5 through 26.
