The City Theatre Company will end its 2014 summer theatre season with the award-winning musical comedy Urinetown: The Musical. Don't let the title fool you! Urinetown is the hit Broadway show by Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis that takes a somewhat unpleasant premise, and turns it completely upside down, resulting in a smart, wonderfully witty, and highly entertaining evening of contemporary musical theatre. Winner of three Tony Awards, three Outer Critic's Circle Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards and two Obie Awards, Urinetown is an earnest tale of love, greed and revolution, where hope always springs eternal!
Rogers Park-area theatres BoHo Theatre, Lifeline Theatre, Raven Theatre, the side project, and Theo Ubique Cabaret Theatre return for a seventh year to offer a flexible subscription pass to see a variety of Rogers Park productions throughout the season, running from September 1, 2014 to August 31, 2015. Dubbed "Chicago's answer to off-Broadway" by the Chicago Sun-Times, the quintet of companies garnered nine Non-Equity Jeff Awards out of thirty-six nominations during the 2013-2014 season and want to share their neighborhood's commitment to excellence with the entire community, by offering this discounted pass with up to 75% savings over regular single tickets.

Following the enormous success of the semi-staged performance of My Fair Lady at the Proms in 2012, John Wilson returns to perform Cole Porter's Tony Award-winning musical Kiss Me, Kate. Joining John Wilson and the John Wilson Orchestra, Broadway stalwarts Ben Davis, Alexandra Silber, Tony Yazbeck and West End star Louise Dearman lead the cast in an irreverent reworking of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew -- a play within a play. This is the BBC Proms debut for all four performers as they sing the energetic score in its original 1948 arrangement.
President and CEO Kim H. Kowalke today announced expanded programmatic initiatives for the The Kurt Weill Foundation for Music. Dr. Kowalke, who was invited to lead the Foundation by Lotte Lenya in 1981, described the present moment as 'the beginning of a new phase in the Foundation's history. The twelve-member Board of Trustees of the Foundation has made available the financial resources necessary to increase funding for grants and sponsorships substantially, expand existing programs, and embark upon new initiatives that will significantly advance the organization's mission. A great, big Broadway season is on its way, with fourteen productions already slated to open in the next few months. With several weeks until the craziness begins, there is still plenty of time to catch up on what's been going on at Broadway's already occupied theaters .

The current Stephen Sondheim tribute show, Our Time, starring KT Sullivan and Jeff Harnar at the Laurie Beechman (which I attended on July 9 and 16; there are two more Wednesday performances at 6pm on August 6, 13), is a charming, classy, and entertaining affair. But it also includes enough flaws in execution that prevent it from being truly great. For one thing, it doesn't really feel like a duo show. It's more like two solo performances within one show, where the performers fit in a couple of numbers together to justify the concept. A critique of the Sullivan/Harnar Sondheim set provides an interesting opportunity to analyze the anatomy of a duo show and the choices that can make it work—or not.
