LA Philharmonic Announces 2018/19 Season Updates

The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association today announced the following updates to the 2018/19 season at Walt Disney Concert Hall.  

Masterworks Series Announces Pianist Misha Dichter In Concert With Violinist Mark Peskanov And Cellist Julian Schwarz

Pianist Misha Dichter will appear in chamber music program with violinist Mark Peskanov and cellist Julian Schwarz as part of the Bargemusic Masterworks Series, Today evening, May 26, 2018 at 6 pm and Sunday afternoon, May 27, 2018 at 4 pm, featuring the New York premieres and world premiere of Gerard Schwarz's Three Duos for violin and cello. The program will also include Schubert's Piano Trio in B-Flat Major, D. 898 (Op. 99).

Houston Symphony Adds All-Beethoven Program To Summer Series

Conductor Andre Raphel Named Conductor Laureate Of The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra

Andre Raphel, Music Director of the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra for the past fifteen years, was honored with the title of Conductor Laureate on Wednesday evening, May 2 at a recognition ceremony taking place in Wheeling, West Virginia.    On May 18, he will conduct the Wheeling Symphony in its season finale program featuring Respighi's "Pines of Rome" and works by Dvorak, Beethoven and Richard Strauss. The concert is to be followed by a public celebration.

Distinguished pianist Misha Dichter will appear in recital alongside pianist Cipa Dichter, as part of Bargemusic's Masterworks Series, Sunday afternoon, May 13, 2018 at 4 pm. The pair will perform Schubert's Fantasy in F minor for four-hands Op. 103, D. 940; Mr. Dichter will also perform with Schubert's Piano Sonata in A Major, D. 959.

Concertmaster Frank Huang To Lead New York Philharmonic

Concertmaster Frank Huang will lead the New York Philharmonic from his chair as Concertmaster in a program spotlighting the Orchestra's string section. The concerts will feature Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 3, with Principal Associate Concertmaster Sheryl Staples as soloist; Mozart's Eine kleine Nachtmusik; and Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings, and take place on Thursday, May 31, 2018, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, June 1 at 11:00 a.m.; Saturday, June 2 at 8:00 p.m.; Tuesday, June 5 at 7:30 p.m.; and Wednesday, June 6 at 7:30 p.m.

Barbara Haws Named Archivist And Historian Emeritus Upon Retirement From NY Philharmonic

The New York Philharmonic has named Barbara Haws Archivist and Historian Emeritus for her leadership role in the creation, curation, and expansion of the Philharmonic's extensive Archives for almost 34 years. She will retire from the Philharmonic in August 2018 and pursue a doctorate in musicology when she matriculates at New College, University of Oxford, in October.

NEXT GENERATION Concert Announced At Potter Violins

Under the direction of National Philharmonic Concertmaster Colin Sorgi, the National Philharmonic Chamber Players perform the works of Schubert and Mendelssohn on April 22 at 3pm at the John Kendall Recital Hall, Potter Violins in Takoma Park, MD. Entitled "Next Generation," the concert showcases gifted students from the Philharmonic's Summer String Institutes performing the Mendelssohn Octet in E-flat Major alongside members of the Philharmonic Chamber Players. The concert also features Schubert's String Quartet in C Major. Potter's intimate hall seats only 90, allowing concert goers to experience chamber music as it was originally intended, up close and personal. Guest conductor Karina Canellakis, winner of the 2016 Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award, makes her second Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra appearance to lead the US premiere of Dai Fujikura's Secret Forest, Beethoven's energetic and uplifting Symphony No. 2 in D Major and Mozart's dramatic Piano Concerto No. 24 in C Minor, performed by David Fray, a "gifted pianist" (Chicago Tribune), on Saturday, April 21, 8 pm, Glendale's Alex Theatre, and Sunday, April 22, 2018, 7 pm, Royce Hall.  Fujikura's work has been described as "a riot of imaginative bird and insect noise - well worth exploring" (The Guardian).

David Robertson To Conduct the New York Phil In 27th Annual Free Memorial Day Concert

David Robertson will conduct the New York Philharmonic in Vaughan Williams's Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis and Saint-Saëns's Symphony No. 3, Organ, with Philharmonic organist Kent Tritle, at the 27th Annual Free Memorial Day Concert, Monday, May 28, 2018, at 8:00 p.m. at The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the performance; ticket distribution will begin at 6:00 p.m. The audio of the performance will be broadcast onto the adjacent Pulpit Green, weather permitting. The program will be presented without intermission.

Andre Raphel To Conduct The Philadelphia Orchestra Summer 2018

André Raphel  returns to the Mann Center of the Performing Arts to conduct the Philadelphia Orchestra in “A Night of Gershwin” on Friday, July 27, 2018 at 8pm.  The All-Gershwin program will include the Cuban Overture, the Piano Concerto in F with Curtis pianist Micah McLaurin, making his Mann Center debut, Porgy and Bess, A Symphonic Picture and also An American in Paris.  The concert is the closing of the Philadelphia Orchestra's Mann Center Residency.

International Street Cannibals Presents THE EASILY SATISFIED LOVER

The new music ensemble, International Street Cannibals (ISC), presents "The Easily Satisfied Lover" - an evening of vocal works from the period of early modernism, which turns its lens on archaic male narratives of romance and reframes them through the voice and sensibility of a 21st century woman. Central to the evening is the performance of Arnold Schoenberg's monodrama, Pierrot Lunaire, op. 21 (1912) - a fantastical setting of 21 poems by Belgian symbolist poet Albert Giraud and freely translated in German by Otto Erich Hartleben. The program is a creation of soprano Ariadne Greif, Los Angeles-based director Gray Palmer, and ISC's founder/director Dan Barrett. It features conducting by maestro Christopher Lyndon-Gee; film footage by Swiss-Japanese filmmaker Caroline Mariko Stucky, especially created for this performance; and technical direction and stage management by Tyler Learned.

Kahchun Wong returns to the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, where he is the Chief Conductor Designate, to conduct two concerts featuring Mahler's Symphony No. 5 on March 17 and 18, 2018. Wong will become the new Chief Conductor of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra beginning in the 2018/2019 season.

The Wallis Presents 'An Evening With Nathan And Julie Gunn'

American baritone Nathan Gunn and pianist Julie Gunn, partners in life and often on stage, will make their debut at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in an evening of cabaret by iconic composers ranging from Leonard Bernstein and Cole Porter to Billy Joel and Tom Waits.  The evening concert from an eclectic American Songbook joins Bernstein at 100, the worldwide celebration of the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein, one of the most prodigiously talented and successful musicians in American history. Jaap van Zweden To Lead New York Philharmonic on ASIA 2018 Tour

Music Director Designate Jaap van Zweden will lead the New York Philharmonic on the ASIA 2018 tour, March 8–18, 2018. The ten-day tour — Jaap van Zweden's first international tour with the Orchestra — will feature eight concerts in five cities. The Orchestra will perform in Beijing, Kyoto, Tokyo, Nagoya, and Taipei. The soloists on the tour are Beijing-born pianist Yuja Wang and Japanese-American violinist Ryu Goto.
